Bought a New Barrel
« on: February 16, 2012, 07:50:17 AM »
I ordered a new 26" 870 Wingmaster (Magnum) barrel this morning. It has RemChokes. My 870 Magnum is in awesome condition (and beautiful) I just never used it with the 30" full choke barrel.

Swampman,
I did the samething a few years ago for my Mod 1100 Rem 12 Ga. It had a 28" modified barrel on it. Originally it was used for early fall squirrel hunting in N.W. Louisiana and E.Texas, along with duck and quail. I put a 26" ribbed barrel on it with Remchokes. It appeared to be faster on quail here in Colorado but on pheasants for some reason kinda of yearned for the 28" barrel. But for quail it is hard to beat!

I picked up an old 870 that was rigged for a bear gun - rifle sighted cylinder bore barrel and extended magazine.  I took off the extension and I'm looking for a bird barrel,  26 -28 inch.  There are a lot moving steadily on Ebay.

For this older 870 I installed the old fashioned spring-cup type magazine stop instead of the plastic ratchet "Express" style stop (at the outer end of the magazine).

How well will an Express barrel work on the gun?  I have an aftermarket magazine cap that is made to work with the detent ball in the magazine ring or with Express mag stop.  Will the barrel work without either ratchet system?

Or should I get an older type 870 barrel with the ball detent in the mag ring?

Would like to have the use of Rem Chokes.

Hope you can follow my meaning here.

I've had an Express barrel on a Wingmaster and it worked fine.

thanks Swampman - this has smoke damage from a fire so its no show piece anyway and I prefer the matte  Express finish as well.

I've let a few barrels slip away on Ebay.  I'm amazed how vigorous the 870 barrel market is on there - steady movement and sometimes real high prices ($150 to over $200) for a barrel that seem identical to ones that go for $100 to $120!

People get crazy on ebay.  I saw an H&R shotgun barrel selling for almost $200 a while back.
