Nobody making anything?
« on: February 17, 2012, 04:23:46 AM »
Come on you guys.  At least one of you must be working on something.

Just finished a holster that is a combination of features from California holster makers of the 1870s.  If you don't have the book "Packing Iron", I would highly recommend it.  That is where I got the ideas for this project.

 ;D That's PURDY!!!   ;D

I got to get that book.  It seems like a standard reference for gun leather.  I have always meant to try to find a copy but just never have.  Think I'll go on line and see what's available.   :-\

I've still got that one belt to finish as well as a rifle sling but time has been at a premium lately.  I need to spend some time in the man cave and get that done.

What time I have had I have used to practice leather carving, especially the "Cherokee Rose" I intend to use on my two (3) gun C&B rig of the same name.   ;D  Once I settle on the carving/stamping design and feel confident in my carving, I'll give it a go.

Which reminds me, what color dye did you use on that holster?

And I got all kinds of other stuff I want to do.  Seems like I got more ideas then time...  :(

One thing I have to do to get that belt done though.  I got a belt buckle plate and am going to try making a leather (covered) belt buckle to match the belt!   :D  Anybody ever try that?   ???  It seems to me the leather piece on the back of the buckle would be the only problem area.  I got to think about things like gluing the leather to the metal, insuring the correct positioning of the hole/cut for the tongue and bar, you know, stuff like that.   ;)

AtlLaw, color is light brown oil dye.  If you use the lighter colors, it becomes very important to keep your hands and work area free of ANY oil, and apply the dye while the leather is still damp from the deglazer.

That is a beautiful holster!  If there was someone in my area that did classes etc....on leatherwork I'd be there.  Just no confidence to jump into something that I know nothing about.  And for me 1st hand experience is much better than reading and pics.
