Mountain man scares owners of remote Utah cabins
« on: February 17, 2012, 05:34:04 AM »
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — He's eluded authorities for more than five years, a mountain man who roams the wilderness of southern Utah, breaking into remote cabins in winter, living in luxury off hot food, alcohol and coffee before stealing provisions and vanishing into the woods.
Investigators have clawed for clues, scouring cabins for fingerprints that match no one and chasing reports of brief encounters only to come up short, always a step behind the mysterious recluse.
They've found abandoned camps, dozens of guns, high-end outdoor gear stolen from the homes and trash strewn around the forest floor.
But the man authorities say is armed and dangerous and responsible for more than two dozen burglaries has continued to outrun the law across a swath of mountains not far from Zion National Park. He's roamed across 1,000 square miles of rugged wilderness where snow can pile 10 feet deep in winter.
And while there have been no violent confrontations, detectives say he's a time bomb. Lately he has been leaving the cabins in disarray and riddled with bullets after defacing religious icons, and a recent note left behind in one cabin warned, "Get off my mountain."
"You wouldn't want to come across that guy," said Iron County Det. Jody Edwards, who has been working the case since 2007.
Theories about his identity have ranged from a 42-year-old man on the FBI's Most Wanted List sought for the 2004 killing of an armored-truck guard in Phoenix to a castaway from the nearby compounds of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the polygamous sect run by jailed leader Warren Jeffs.
The FBI recently discounted the theory that the man was their fugitive after authorities got the first pictures of him from a motion-triggered surveillance camera outside a cabin showing a sandy-haired man in camouflage on snowshoes, a rifle slung over his shoulder. The photos were captured sometime in December.
"We believe that is not Jason Derek Brown," FBI special agent Manuel Johnson told The Associated Press.
However, Edwards isn't so quick to rule out the possibility, given the close resemblance to Brown, who was raised Mormon and is a highly educated, well-traveled avid outdoorsman.
So while detectives believe they are getting close, buoyed by the recent photos, the shadowy survivalist remains an enigma. No missing person report appears to fit, and fingerprints lifted from cabins have yielded no match.
Meanwhile, cabin owners are growing more frightened by the day and are left wondering who might be sleeping in their beds this winter.
"He's scaring the daylights out of cabin owners. Now everyone's packing guns," said Jud Hendrickson, a 62-year-old mortgage advisor from nearby St. George who keeps a trailer in the area.
In November 2010, Bruce Stucki, another cabin owner, said a burglar broke into his cabin through a narrow window, pried open a gun case with a crowbar and laid out the weapons but took none. At a nearby cabin, the man reportedly took only the grips from gun handles.
"He could stand in the trees and pop you off and no one would know who killed you," Stucki said.
Some cabins he has left tidy and clean, while others he has practically destroyed, even defecating in one in a pan on the floor.
"He should know he's being followed, but I don't think this guy is normal in any way," said Stucki, who, like many cabin owners, has a lot of his own theories.
"He's anti-religious, waiting for the mothership to come in," Stucki speculated.
Investigators say they have found several of the man's unattended summer camps, what they initially thought were left behind by "doomsday" believers preparing for some sort of apocalypse because of the remote locations and supplies like weapons, radios, batteries, dehydrated food and camping gear.
Edwards said two camps found a few years ago were stocked with 19 guns. One of the camps also had a copy of Jon Krakauer's "Into the Wild," a book about a young man who died after wandering into the Alaskan wilderness to live alone off the land.
The cabin burglar has managed to avoid being seen all but twice over the years, each time retreating into the forest.
The coffee and alcohol the survivalist favors plays into some cabin owners' assessment that he could be a castaway from the nearby twin towns of Hildale or Colorado City on the Utah-Arizona border. The so-called lost boys are said to be regularly booted from the polygamous sect there by elders looking to increase their marriage opportunities with young women.
Unlike members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which discourages consumption of alcohol and coffee, many of the Mormon fundamentalists imbibe.
Detectives aren't sharing their latest assessments but "we've got a lot of leads" from the surveillance photos, Edwards said. "I would say we're very close to making a positive ID on him. We just got to catch this guy."
To cabin owners in southern Utah, he remains a spooky and menacing figure.
"We feel like we're being subject to terrorism by this guy," Hendrickson said. "My wife says flat-out she's not going back to our trailer until they catch him."

One of these days he's going to break into the wrong cabin, and that will be the end of him. There are some pretty colorful stories of thieves being treated less than hospitably by irate property owners.

well, you guys beat me to it.  I have often wondered how I would fare trying something like that.  The big difference is I am not anti social that much and I DO NOT steal.

Something like 20 years ago there was a man living the same way in the foothills here.  I think he was wanted for manslaughter in conjunction with his activities.  He made stilts of deer legs, so left no tracks they could find.  Finally a deputy or, maybe the sherriff checked a cabin, heard a squeak from the floor, and knew he had the man.  The brave part was calmly backing into a window, radioing:  "nothing here, coming back", and walking away to where he could get reinforcements.

This also calls to mind the father/son who killed a skier and kidnapped his fiance for a "wife".  I think that one was in Montana.

I do indeed carry a sidearm, but wonder whether I am tougher than these sorts.  And they probably would have the drop on any of us.

I would think if they really wanted to, they could catch him.  Put a couple of packs of good hounds on him.  And I'd think there are plenty of Utah folks who won't be easily scared by this guy.  Probably he doesn't seem like enough of a threat to really put the resources on him. But he could get worse. I would think those winter snows in Utah would really limit his travel and make him easier to track down or at least corner.

This story brings to mind a couple of others  years past. Claude Dallas out west, and William Holembaugh (AKA) Bycycle pete from Shade Gap, Pennsylvania.

I remember the kidnapping of Peggy Bradnick by Hollembaugh well. I had just started my first job as a DJ, when the story broke. We did a lot of live news casts in those day's and I got in a lot of practice reading the breaking events of that story. They launched the biggest manhunt in US history at that time, If memory serves! They sent tracking dogs all the way from Arkansas back to Penn.I believe these are the ones he was credited with killing. They later made a movie based on the kidnapping of Peggy Bradnick.

While I'm sure he can take care of himself, the longer he lives alone, the worse things may get.  I had a friend who lived alone for a long time without company. A real woodsman type.  He gradually became paranoid. When anybody strange to him approached, he would hide behind a tree or run off. He set fish lines with hooks about chest high near his woods. I went in with the law to help get him out.  I was in some heavy cover on a trail when the wind picked up. A couple of baseball size stones fell out of a tree and landed at my feet. When we looked up, there was a bunch of stones piled up in the crotch of a tree. Strange. We eventually got him some help. It wasn't pretty.

This fella may get startled by an approaching stranger and shoot them. He's on the run from something for sure. I hope it ends well. If you live alone, get out every couple months or so.

I had just started my first full  time job wi Alaska Fish and Game and had gotten deputized when we started getting warnings about that Claude Dallas way out in Dutch Harbor!  He was one guy I didn't want to fool with - was glad when he was caught.

We had a guy on a remote fish counting camp that spent his winters trapping real remote. Had to let him go when he almost confronted a neighbor with a gun just 'cause the neighbor had made a bit of racket hooking an old rattly boat trailer to a 4 wheeler.  That guy had probably been by himself too long. But some of those types are alone whether in a city or in the woods.  I think it may not be the isolation of the woods so much as other issues of the head that cause them to isolate themselves wherever they are.

  This from FOX NEWS 02/23
SALT LAKE CITY –  Troy James Knapp is a wanted man, a mountain recluse authorities say is responsible for more than two dozen cabin burglaries in the remote southern Utah wilderness. He's considered armed and dangerous, a ticking time bomb.
After more than five years on the loose, a virtual ghost in the woods, authorities say they have finally identified their suspect. Now they just have to catch him.
They've tracked him across hundreds of square miles of wilderness near Zion National Park but have always been one step behind, discovering his unattended summer camps stocked with guns and supplies, but nothing else. He has managed to avoid being  seen but twice before retreating into the forest.
Now that authorities believe they know who he is, they're honing in on everyone who knows him. According to court records, detectives are tracking telephone calls to his family members in Moscow, Idaho, trying to determine if he is using a cellphone.
Investigators say family members have had little contact with Knapp, an ex-convict they believe is still roaming somewhere across roughly 1,000 square miles of wilderness.
He is believed to have set off on a solitary life some nine years ago after his release from a California prison.
His family, originally from Michigan, has offered little help -- "the ones that will acknowledge having anything to do with him," Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Michael Wingert told The Associated Press. "He's just kind of out there on his own. I don't know if he's fed up with civilization."
A recent court order allows marshals and sheriff's detectives to track calls made to and by a couple in their 60s -- Bruce and Barbara Knapp of Moscow, who are relatives of the 44-year-old fugitive.
The Knapps haven't returned repeated telephone calls from the AP. No one answered the door at their home Wednesday.
Detectives in Utah's Iron and Kane counties announced late Tuesday that Troy Knapp was their long-sought suspect in dozens of cabin burglaries, aided by recent surveillance photos captured of him outside one cabin and fingerprints lifted from another that authorities say finally were matched to him in January.
A Kane County arrest warrant charges Knapp with three burglaries and a weapons charge.
Knapp has a lengthy criminal record that includes assault with a dangerous weapon, Kane County prosecutor Robert Van Dyke said Wednesday. He did not elaborate.
As a teenager, Knapp was convicted in Michigan of breaking and entering, passing bad checks and unlawful flight from authorities, according to court records in Kalamazoo County.
The Utah arrest warrant says Knapp was charged with theft in 2000 in California. Court records indicate he pleaded guilty to burglary and was sentenced to two years in prison.
Utah authorities are calling Knapp armed and "possibly dangerous if cornered." He is using remote cabins for sustenance and warmth during winter -- "burning up all their firewood, eating all their food," Iron County Detective Jody Edwards has said.
In summer, the suspect retreats to makeshift camps deep in the forest.
"This guy is probably about as true a survivalist as Davy Crockett," Wingert said.
Knapp "dropped off everybody's radar in 2003 and nobody has heard from him since," he added. "He just dropped off the face of the earth."
"That's wonderful that they know him," cabin owner Bruce Stucki said Tuesday. "Now they need to get him in custody."
While there have been no violent confrontations, detectives have called him a time bomb. Over the years, he has left some cabins tidy and clean, while others he has practically destroyed, even defecating in a pan on the floor in one home.
Lately, he has been leaving the cabins in disarray and riddled with bullets after defacing religious icons, and a recent note left behind in one cabin warned, "Get off my mountain."
In a Jan. 27 court filing, Kane County authorities said Knapp had left behind even more threatening notes aimed at law enforcement.
"Hey Sheriff ... Gonna put you in the ground!" one note said.
From the beginning, the suspect's lore grew, leading to theories that he might have been two separate men on the FBI's most-wanted list or possibly a castaway from the nearby compounds of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the polygamous sect run by jailed leader Warren Jeffs.
They now have a name, but the man remains in the mist.
"He's scaring the daylights out of cabin owners. Now everyone's packing guns," said Jud Hendrickson, a 62-year-old mortgage adviser from nearby St. George who keeps a trailer in the area. "We feel like we're being subject to terrorism by this guy."

I can't bring myself to admire predator of the innocent, a thief, a vandal, a burglar, a litterbug, and a sloppy camper. The guy is a criminal and needs to be in jail.

I don't see him as any of this.

You have to read what the article doesn't say.  I try to do that.

I hope they don't catch him.

Well the article doesn't say how he pays for the food, etc that he steals from folks who paid for it or how much money he leaves to pay for the damage he does. The article failed to mention those things. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

It says what the police and the media want you to believe.  It's fear mongering at it's finest, but hey some of you didn't read what it didn't say.  Based on past personal experience I'd say most of the report is a load of crap.  I hope they don't catch him.

So Swampy do YOU want to bump into him in the woods?  I think you are foolishly romanticizing this guy. Its no fun to meet a nut case in the wild.  But I bet he's getting help from family either by coercion or misguided loyalty. I don't wish the guy ill but if you own remote property and have had it damaged and stolen its very annoying at least and at worst leaves you feeling very violated.  The guy probably needs help. Yeah the cops are likely to go pretty rough on him.  If this guy didn't mess with other people's stuff or steal, I'd feel more charitable - but he's probably stealing game and other public resources from all of us.

I'd hate to have a bugout cabin that I was depending on for the well being and life of my family and then find out that a thief had stolen everything. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(

I wouldn't be afraid of him at all.  He's probably taken a few of the King's deer......so what?  The cops are just painting him in a bad light to try to turn those that are helping him against him.  They do that all the time.
