He'd probably kill you and rob you. I think you're fantasizing about what people like this are really like. They are psychopaths first, and sociopaths second. When they start committing crimes, bigger crimes follow. That's quite a bit different from the romantic notion of a carefree vagabond or reclusive woodsman that you may have.

It seems you live in fear.  I do not.  There's nothing romantic about this....it's simply being homeless in the woods compared to being homeless in town.  Folks have lived this way for eons.

I read about it every day in Lou but they are referred to as home invaders, burglars, and thieves. They also make their living by stealing from those who work for a living. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

No that's not how folks lived for years. Of course there has always been scumbags but it use to be that if you were in the wild and needed a person's cabin, and or goods to survive, you made sure to pay them back one way or another. If you so much as used their wood to keep warm you replenished the pile before leaving. You didn't trash the place, defile it with excrement and steal them blind. Make all the excuses for this guy that you want but fact is that no matter what you choose to call a thief....he's still a thief! As to reading between the lines do you really think it ok to make up your own imaginary facts, and incert them into the known facts, simply for the sake of making things fit your theory? Really?

So your ancestors always abided the white man's law when they needed things to survive?

As you well know they were at war for the survival of the whole as a race and were'nt given much of a choice. This guy chose his path all on his own. If you can't tell the differance then I doubt anyone here could educate you. Swamp, I won't beat around the bush and will tell you straight up, I seriously doubt you care two cents worth about this guy. You simply love to argue and bait

Like I said you're not reading what the article doesn't say.  These could be the acts of several hermits, kids, the police, or the homeowners themselves.  I believe little of anything that's in the media, or reported by law enforcement.  I've been involved in many similar tales.  Nothing reported in the papers was factual.

Maybe so Swamp but It but it doesn't say a lot of things. You could and can fill in the blanks with anything you like. Could be alliens from Mars vandalizing the cabins...but I doubt it. Since when does taking known facts, then incerting your own imagination, make things the truth? I'm not going to say the guy is guilty of everything said, but unlike you, I'm not about to say he's inocent of it all either. I'm simply saying that if he is guilty he deserves the same as any other vandal and thief. I doubt you'd defend him if it were your home you broke into.

If this person the media calls a "Mountain Man", they need too pick a more appropriate title.

To me Mountain Man is a person whom lives off the land and / or barters / trades furs or other goods. Mountian Man - a man who lives on the frontier

I can only consider the facts, so if this so call Mountain Man is just a starving thief then he needs too be titled as such. Burglar - A thief who enters a building with intent to steal.

The correct title should read something like:
Burglar scares owners of remote Utah cabins

When caught he need to be incarcerated for his actions.

Incarcerate - To put into jail.

I give credit where credit is do, so all the above definitions come from:

sort of a modern day Robin Hood.
I am about to step in something stinky here I think!
But I see what SwampMan is saying. It is apparent that this person is going out
of his way to avoid people. I would wager he is pretty much harmless.
Who knows, this Guy may have lost his job and may have his family with him.
Providing for them the best way he can. I can't say I would not do the same thing
to feed my family. He may have just said the Heck with modern society
and walked out on it. From some of the stuff I have read, he seems to dislike
religion also. I doubt he is living in the mountains full time. He just goes "Shopping" there.
Is what he is doing wrong? Absolutely, why is he doing it? who knows.
Would all of you do it to feed your family? I'll bet most would.
The Government and the media do indeed paint folks who step out of the mainstream
in the most negative light they can. Makes it easier to explain when they are done away with.
Ruby ridge is a perfect and indisputable example of that.

He's no different than Randy Weaver.  If he were blowing up abortion clinics or gay bars he'd have plenty of support here.  Funny bunch with double standards....

Does this give him the right to allegedly steal, pilfer, vandalize, and terrorize remote areas where people allegedly try to live in solitude?  I see nothing to read between the lines on that.

Also, comparing the guy with the misnomer of "Mountain Man" and Ruby Ridge is like comparing "skunks" and "jackles".  Best of my recollection Ruby Ridge is about a family protecting life and property against illegal search and seizure that terribly and wrongfully got out of hand by the FBI and other LE. That is a whole different thread that I am sure has been discussed on GB.

If your going to do a comparison why not compare him (MM) with "folk heros" (I'm sure some people think they are) like D. B. Cooper, The Mad Bomber, or even the Green River Killer.

Swampman, you are correct.  That is why I wrote in bold and underlined ALLEGEDLY.  He will remain innocent until a jury of his peers decide whether he is guilty or not guilty. Isn't our Constitution wonderful (if we can only keep it)?

How do we know he is not like any of them? Do we know anything about him except what the media published that the LE allegedly said and you said yourself that the media does not print the truth.  D.B. Cooper never harmed anyone, did he?  He just stole from thieves (pure conjecture).  I also correct myself--not the Mad Bomber, but the Unibomber.

SPIRITHAWK. Good posts Sir, as well as everybody here but swampy. Stealing to survive is a copout. A thief is a thief and should be treated as such. Robin hood?? He stole from the rich to give to the poor, this guy seems to be stealing for himself.
Mountain Man?? Hardly. Mountain man was a title of pride, self preservation, honesty, and hard work. This guy certainly does not deserve to be called a mountain man. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

The longer this guy is loose the more invincible and righteous he will see himself, and the more dangerous he will become. Only a matter of time before he exchanges fire with somebody who has earned what he has and will fight to keep it, or he kills somebody. Like Spirithawk said, if we, normal honest folks, had to break in to survive we would make an attempt to pay for or replace what we used or took. This guy seems to think it is owed to him. If the law really wanted him he could be caught, I guess they don't see a threat yet, but they will. POWDERMAN.  :o :o
