14" to 16" conversion

New guy here with a question. Is it legal to permenantly attached a 2" or 3" muzzle brake to a 14" .44 mag barrel and use it with a shoulder stock?

Yes it would be. I'm not sure that would be the best option as the muzzle breaks are NOISY and in that length of barrel it would just rattle your head fired as a rifle. I would give Ed (click on his link) a call and see if he would have a nice super 16 in his inventory. They are still plenty loud when your head is on the stock and you touch one off. Nice handy barrels though.

It seems it would be faster and cheaper to sell the 14" and buy a 16"  than to pay a smith to weld on a muzzle attachment and refinish the old barrel and wait for the turn around time. Find the right deal in the classifieds and you might even make money. I once planned on reaming out a 357 mag barrel to max. Cost would have been $90 and instead I traded my mag barrel plus $20 to a shop for a Max.

The Choate folks of stock making fame make
(or used to make) a barrel extension/ flash hider
that does what you're asking about. It's already
blued and has a hole ready to put a bead of weld
for permanent attachment. When I was trying to
make my 30/30 shorty, 16 inchers just weren't
to be found, and I went with this. No regrets,
shoots as well as it ever did, and I enjoy embarrassing
folks with high dollar bolt guns at my rare public
shooting range trips when we go downrange
to pick up targets. I'm not really any better, they
just can't figure a short gun like that shooting
with their firearms.
