First 1911 RIA Gov. in 38 Super. Mod Questions
« on: February 19, 2012, 07:02:50 AM »
I have purchase a NIB, RIA 1911 in 38 Super. Bought it on Gun Broker and am expecting delivery in a few days. It is full size. I am wanting to install a Beaver Tail Safety and some better sights. I know the front sight is a post and not a dove tail. And looking at Beaver Tail safeties they list them for 70 and 80 series. I Have know idea which one it is. May replace trigger and hammer while I am at it, will be doing that eventually has funds come available. I need to be pointed in the right direction. Have know idea what tools are needed or where to start with parts. And like I said not that familiar with 1911's.
Thanks,
Bobby

baflyrod:  Some of the work you want to complete may require fitting of parts like the grip safety, or gunsmithing services like changing out the front sight and unless you are either really good at this sort of thing or a qualified gunsmith, you may wish to have it done for you and save yourself some serious aggravation (as I should have done any number of times......).
I think one of the best tools you willneed is right at your disposal - it's the internet and Greybeards.  We can surely point you  in the right direction to preferred gunshops/smiths.  I would check with William Layton and see who he uses.
Re:  your questions:  Your pistol would take a grip safety for a Series 70 if using Colt parts.  You can obtain a drop-in beavertail from Kings, and other places.  Hammer and trigger groups often work better if they are made by the same parts maker or the same gunshop.  For sights, I would use Heinies or something similar and even adjustable.
I am also going to recommend that you take this pistol to the range and shoot the snot out of it to see how she shoots and functions, and feels in your hand - you may change your mind on some of the 'modifications'.  I would go one step further to recommend a shop/gunsmith that specializes in 38 Supers because my thoughts are that you could get the gun, shoot it for a while, save up your $ by not making any modifications yourself and then sending it out for the service you want.
And don't forget to have fun........or to let us know whatcha doin'.......

What Mikey said----I support gunsmiths---because they support me.
I am not allowed to own a hammer in the state of Texas.

I would recommend a Wilson style grip saftey with the bump on the bottom ,a fitting jig is avaliable to make it a can do project if your handy ?
The most popular is the ED Brown type saftey as it gits your grip higher on the frame , a jig is also avalible for it but it requires  alot more metal to be removed  from the sides of the frames rear tang and  possibley compleat frame refinishing to make it look right
I have installed many of each designe and for the first time i would go with the wilson type , Its easyer to install and just some cold blue to reblue frame as just about the whole cut will be hidden by the grip saftey.

What Mikey said,
And call Brownells for their 1911 catalog. That will keep you dreaming for a while. They have techs to help you along the way, too.

A "good" gunsmith can examine the gun and advise you on what he would reccommend.
Talk to one and tell him what you like and let him take a look at the construction and parts--then go from there.
If you take my advice--which is not reccommended--you will end up with a new gun after all the parts changeing and fittin.  ::) :P
