Firing Mechanism?

New to the forum and to cannon ownership.
What I am looking for is a firing mechanism for my Lyle gun. It is not an original Lyle. It is made from solid 4" bronze stock and the bore is half the diameter of an original.
I have search the web and talked with a few cannon dealers and I have come up empty.
Maybe someone on here can point me in the right direction or have plans on how to machine one that I could scale down to match my Lyle gun.

Thank for all the info and photos. Now I just have to figure out the best way to cut the bore since I have never used a boring bar.
I'll post some photos when I am done.

I haven't quite figure this out yet.  Does some sort of cartridge go in the long threaded piece with the flat sided flange ?

     I've always wondered about that big cylinder protruding out from the area where the vent would be on these guns.  Thanks to Intoodeep and the link he posted,  this one:  http://www.sarcoinc.com/lyle.html  , now we have an assembly drawing which shows that a .32 cal. blank cartridge was used as a primer which was initiated by a simple striker device.  Looks like the entire cartridge is within the body of the firing attachment and that the bottom end of the  cartridge is about where the wrench shoulder nut is, just above the seating ring.

Very interesting and designed with all-weather reliability as the foremost criteria in mind.

 I should have mentioned that you could forego the firing mechanism. Not all lyle guns used them. I believe this was only required by the USLSS. I have seen quite a few with just a standard vent hole.

 However, it would be neat to see a scale version of one. Maybe, in .22.  ;)

This mechanism could be adapted to use shotgun primers.

That's what DD's link shows.  I think it would be easier to obtain shotgun primers.  I know of some mortar crews using a similar device that uses the shotgun primers.
