I've always wondered about that big cylinder protruding out from the area where the vent would be on these guns. Thanks to Intoodeep and the link he posted, this one:
http://www.sarcoinc.com/lyle.html , now we have an assembly drawing which shows that a .32 cal. blank cartridge was used as a primer which was initiated by a simple striker device. Looks like the entire cartridge is within the body of the firing attachment and that the bottom end of the cartridge is about where the wrench shoulder nut is, just above the seating ring.
Very interesting and designed with all-weather reliability as the foremost criteria in mind.
