Bolt removal for storage?

I was moving my guns around in the gun cabinet and came up woth a question.  Do any of you remove your bolts for storage?  I found that if I leave them open they catch the rifle beside it when I take the gun out or they hit the scope on the rifle beside it.  And if I leave it closed it hits the rifle beside it.

I used to work with a guy who done that to all his bolt actions, problem arose when he had collected a number of bolt actions and forgot which bolt went to which rifle.

1 bolt says Savage, 1 bolt says Stevens, and the other is .22lr so I am good.

Oh man...I can just see me trying to figure out if the bolt I put in one of Rem 700 rifles was the 06, 270 or 35W bolt.....maybe it won't matter????

Naw, I keep all my guns assembled so I don't lose anything. Only exception is contenders...  ;)

A few years ago a friend & I was on a brown bear hunt in southeast alaska. My friend not owning a suitable rifle had borrowed a ruger in 338 WM. When we anchored up near where we intended to hunt, my friend decided to shoot his gun. Ammo would not fit & bolt would not close. Turned out the guy that he borrowed the rifle owned a pair of them, one in 30/06 & one in 338. He had given my friend the 338 rifle & ammo but the 30/06 bolt. Luckly I had brought a extra rifle, being famular with Murphys law.  :o

I leave my bolts in but decock the firing pin spring before storage.

I usually take mine out and hide them separately. My thinking is a rifle without a bolt has little value to a thief. I did make it halfway to Montana once with a .270 minus bolt. Funny thing, a rifle without a bolt has little value to a hunter (me) as well. Luckily, a friend was leaving a day later and brought the bolt.

I just alternate the guns, one barrel up, the next barrel down.  It increases my loading density considerably.

In one area I lived each bolt had a tag on it and was removed from the action and hidden . Did the same with forearns from shotguns.  If stolen ,they would be harder to sell.

AMEN!!

Personally I keep them in the safe muzzle down bolt open/lifted. On guns with long storage I remove scopes and slide into sleeve bolt closed and undocked.
