Citizens shoot down drone
« on: February 20, 2012, 07:41:51 AM »
Seems some bird shooters did not like some animal rights group video taping them.  Kind of stupid on the environmental groups part.

A few years back when I lived in Anchorage.  The Radio Controled Airplane Club liked to fly out near the tidal flats of Knik Arm.  during the simmer there was no problem, but come Duck season, the Duck and Goose hunters did not think too highly of R/Cs spooking the ducks.  A few were shot down.

Can just hear the talk around the coffee counter Monday morning.  Yea man, I got 2 Geese, 4 mallards, 6 Teal, and a P-51 Mustang, Saturday morning.

I would like to know more about the pigeon shoot. I wanted to raise pigeons for wing shooting at one time and was told it is against federal laws.

I'm glad no one was hurt when the spy eye hit the highway. Wish the shooters could have captured it and carried it home. Probably could have made a BBQ grill out of it.

That's funny! Nice shooting!

On the other hand, does this mean it would be legal for me to hover a drone outside my neighbor's window and watch what's going on inside? Doesn't seem to be much difference between this application of a drone being legal when used to observe an event on private property and the peeping tom use of the same drone.

Then there's this question:

Is it illegal for someone to shoot down a drone if the shot is otherwise legal? For example, if they don't shoot across the road, which is illegal in some places.

It's not shooting at a person, or protected wildlife, or public property like a traffic light, and it was apparently shot over a known and presumably legal gun club.

If some weird little thing comes flying over my house I'll assume it's a fire hazard or something else that can do some property damage, and I see no reason why I shouldn't remove the hazard. It seems to me that the responsibility for what to fly where should be with the owner of the flying machine.

Another thing: Did that drone make noise loud enough to be considered a public nuisance? A lot of places don't allow loud machines to be operated. I figure if something loud an obnoxious is hovering on my property there better be a good reason for it to be there.

That's funny
Our shooting club has a RC club right next to it . Many members of these clubs belong to both. We joke back and forth about aerial targets and wing mounted Glocks. How much lead you need to take down a biplane and exactly what is the best speed to release rotten egg bombs.

But this wacko done what he did for effect ,which he got they probably should have let him be rather than give him what he wanted.
But it's still funny ;D

I watched the video and didn't see any evidence that the drone had been shot down. It looks like it went up and came back to its launch site. No crash or obvious damage was shown. It does clearly show the activists harassing somebody verbally. Looks like a well documented case of assault to me.

Since this thread seems to be the active one on this subject I am moving my post to here:

I wonder what the definition of a R/C toy is and remote controlled drone is? At this time I think you need a FAA waiver to fly a remote controlled drone. Even though the chopper was probably a common R/C toy it was not being used for recreational purposes but for commercial reasons. Would that then make it a drone? It is also not safe to fly that thing over a highway, could have struck a vehicle from just lost of control for whatever reasons. Imagine being on a motorcycle at 70mph and having that thing run into you.

Interesting article. See last few paragraphs for notes on lack of regulations for these things. It would surprise me if other laws pertaining to surveillance did not cover the privacy issues, though.

You know I have looked at this video several times.  I think if it had been hit by shot from a shotgun, the shock would have shown up on the footage.  To me it looks like they were having problems with the one propeller, it kept quitting during flight, yet it was not shattered during flight.  The vehicle was brought back to the take off spot, meaning it was under control of the person flying it.  Upon landing the propeller that had not been working properly quite again and the vehicle came down on it's side causing damage to that propeller.  They kept showing the damaged propeller, making it look like it had been shot.  But the damage was done upon landing.

Do you guys agree with me?  Rog

ROG. Not sure. Don't know the range or size shot either. I doubt it would take a lot to damage a propeller, personally if the background was fairly clear I'd of used a 22, but like I said it would depend on the path the bullet would take. I'd of liked to have been there though. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

I dont mean to hijack this thread but these "animal rights" whack jobs are dangerous. This person in the woods on this pigeon shoot videos was smart to not respond to their taunts becuase they probably would have murdered him had he responded to their invite for a "friendly" conversation.

I saw this on the news last night. This woman was charged with trying to hire a hitman on facebook to kill someone 12 years old or older for wearing fur. The whacko said she wanted to be present so that she could hand out literature on the fur industry right after the murder had occured.

I do agree with you (see my post a few up from yours). I didn't see any evidence of a hit either, and I think the prop "problems" may have been under control also. I assume they can be selectively shut off remotely. Also, the crash wasn't shown.

I only watched the video once, but don't recall seeing anyone in the woods except the animal rights guy who was taunting somebody, real or imaginary.

We don't know where the shot sounds were from. They were pretty loud and sounded like high velocity 22LR, so they may have been fired by the animal rights guys.

It looks like it was all staged.

Thanks for posting the PETA person wanting a hitman post. I heard about it on the radio this morning but could not find it when I searched. Obviously a wack job. Has a lot of demands for the hitman for no more than she was offering to pay.

Its frightening. How many people wear "faux fur" now days? A lot more than wear real fur I'll bet and this woman would have had someone gunned down for wearing fake fur as long as they were at least 12 years old...Unless she could tell fake fur from real fur at a distance ::)

We used to have folks flying their RC planes every weekend just across the river from my house.
which I would not have minded so much if they would not have started at daylight..
My solution was modified Estes Rockets. The engines have a small charge to pop out
the Parachute. But instead of the parachute on mine they would pop out a dozen or so
strands of fishing line to tangle the prop of the plane. I also sprinkled some orange chalk
so I could tell where my "Anti-Aircraft" missiles were going off. Don't know how effective they were
but it was quite fun!

You willing to share your plans SS for those anti-drone rockets!!??

But who wants to bet that if the fedcoats decide to spy on us domestically, it WON'T become a huge felony of some kind when trying to shootdown the 'sky spy?'  ::)

Not that that would desuade eveyone from taking a shot or two  ;D  .....  But just don't let your face or license plate, etc. get filmed doing it!

Would dropping rotten egg bombs on federal judges also be a felony?

***ALSO ..... The second book in Matthew Bracken's "Enemies Foreign and Domestic" book series, actually talked about a lady who with her husband, were arrested with another couple deep in a Oregon nat'l forest when a drone spotted them out shooting their firearms, enjoying their 2nd amendment!  Of course that was a futuristic 'scene' and a damm scary one!

they were nothing special, Just go to a craft/hobby store and buy one.
make sure they use at least C size engines or you will get no range.
instead of using the parachute, cut a dozen or so pieces of 15 Lb fishing line
about 2 feet long. place them in the rocket carefully to avoid tangles.
sprinkle in a couple of tablespoons full of orange carpenters chalk
and you are good to go. this violates no laws that I can find in my state.
they are pretty harmless. You can also attach a LONG piece of jute line with a parachute
on the end of it. it will float for quite some time.
Something else that is interesting is  a "Barrage Balloon" this is simply helium balloons
with a long piece of Jute string dangling below it. I don't use fishing line here.
just too long of a piece to deliberately unleash on nature and powerlines.
When creating your Balloons, tie them to something in a bundle of a dozen or so
by their jute strings. that way, you can launch them in a VOLLY with a simple snip of the shears!
Wind direction is also a major factor here! Balloons are no good if they are not where the RC
planes are. you will find that the "Pilots" of the RC planes cannot resist "Attacking" the balloons!
and like a spider in a web! Snag, Gotcha' Use red or orange balloons so you can track their progress more
easily.
