308 bull gettin closer
« on: February 20, 2012, 10:15:35 AM »
Hey all, used the trigger extension fix from the faq and have had 0 ftf since. Have a new wolf spring here but I will leave well enough alone.
I have been trying to find a load for the 308 and it looks like it starting to move in the right direction. Using horniday sst got me to 3/4 inch. Today tried barnes ttsx 165 with 41 gr. vargett seated at 5 different coal and got one group [3.029 coal] all three touching. Next best is 3.001 coal and then 3.011coal. The 3.029 group can be covered with a dime and the other two are real close. Keep in mind this is only at 50 yards off my picnic table. So what should I do next, try to repeat these three coals or go up with powder on the tightest group?? I would like to finish with one ragged hole at this distance. Any advice would be great. Also I am new to reloading so take it easy on me :) :)

Just a question, why are you messing with col at this point?  Have you worked up a load that is close for each bullet you are shooting?  I may be missing something here so don't be offended.  What I do is spit the neck on a sized case, insert bullet long, close up breach, remove, and measure the length, and subtract .020-.040.  (Just load em all the same length)  Find my best powder load, then mess with col if I need to.

Thanks for the reply, I used the info from barnes load data. It said that 41 vargett was the most accurate load. So I used that and started moving the coal around.I did use the split case trick to determine the max coal for my gun. By your reply I should load all the same coal - starting at min grain moving up to max grain- take best group and try to improve it by changing coal? Wow  I was cornfused :) :)  Please let me know and THANKS!!

Sounds like you,re on the right track. I'd take the best one (oal) and play with the powder loads. 45 gr 4320 behind a 150 bt at2.975 oal works in mine. 3/4 inch groups at 100 but i,m going to tinker with it a little more. I,e gotta try the split case trick that Rev uses to see just how deep the throat on my handi is. Good luck.

Cleaning rod method works great for seeing how deep the throat is for the particular bullet your using.

In my experience the powder charge affects accuracy more than col.  Now you started with a proven accuracy load for some rifle, not necessarily yours, but it seemed to work out.

Some handi rifles have a lot of bullet jump, but are very accurate rifles with the correct load.  So, TO ME, you may have arrived at the same destination in reverse ;)
