45-70 BC, your thoughts please.
« on: February 20, 2012, 10:16:10 AM »
Walked into local gun store and he had a 100% mint condition BC 45-70 for 250$. Needless to say I plunked a 100 bucks down on it. Share your thoughts about this gun. I.e. accuracy, favorite loads, scoped or with reciever sight. All info appreciated.

gonna pick her up friday, that makes 2 handis in the month of february. The cherry on top is he had a pile of used reloading equipment for great prices. Walked out with a rcbs 505 scale and lyman powder trickler for 15$ total, and a used 3 piece rcbs 45-70 die set for 20.

WOW! You made out WELL!  ;D
My Father in Law just picked up a .45-70 BC. Looks like a Sweet piece of machinery. Haven't heard a range report yet, but it sure looks and feels GOOD. ::)
Congrats!

Can't beat the BC for all around fun.  Impress the guys at the range when you shoot the target post in two!

I had some of the Lyman FB 385gr  RN, 32 gr of IMR 4198, using Wms Rear peep, shot clover leafs from sandbags @ 75 yards, hard to complain about that.

Im gonna have to start with factory loads to acquire some brass. That being said is there any factory ammo i should stay away from due to the "short throat" problems with the handis?

Get Starline if you can.  Many of mine have over 10 reloads on them with zero case failures.  Avoid Hornady as it's undersized if you want to reload.  I find it a real pain to load anyway.  Remington 405's are good shooting in most peoples guns if you want to start with factory loads that work as is.  I'd go for the good brass though as I stated.  I'm still on my original 100 with zero failures.  ;)

Have had mine for 3 years now. Shoots 300gr Rem HPs with IMR 4198 and loves'em! Last week i finally found a load for the cast 405's with IMR3031 and at a 100yds with the peeps i put four down range that were all touch'n. Can't complain! Now if i can get my H&R Ultra in 450 Marlin to shoot cast like that i will die a happy man!!

Nice guns...I'd cut the barrel to 26" or hire someone else to carry it.

Cutting a few off the barrel has definitely crossed my mind. Gonna try it out and see how I like it a stock length for awhile.

I won't cut mine, but I love the long hangin barrel.  Does get a bit heavy during a day of pushing though, but that's why I have my .45 LC Classic Carbine!  That's my walkin gun!

Cut it? NO way. If I ever run into somebody who wants a short BC, I'll Trade my 22" barrel for his 32". I am no great friend of short rifles. I have several that measure 48-52" overall. I never use scopes and like the long sight picture.

Comments on the 45-70. I have it in the Encore and can tell ya if ya never shot a 45-70 you will realize real quick why some use it for Africa. With heavy loads it kicks! I ran some 300 gr. Rem / 36 Gr IMR 4227 and the scope cut my forehead open. Was not ready for that. Rev. BC here at Graybeard sold it to me. He said it kicked but didn't say it kicked like that. I don't even want to shoot a max load with 405 gr.

I agree with Swampy.  The only things it adds are weight and the old time look.  It's not needed with modern propellents and a scoped rifle.

I have a friend that would disagree with you on this
He shoots blackpowder cartridge and loves a long barrel

Says he gets a better burn rate.

I did not like the front heavy nature of the 32" barrel, so I added some weight to the stock  :P

A lot of people believe that.  Black Powder burns 100 times faster than smokeless.

I have no plans of shooting black powder through it. Like I said gonna shoot it for awhile and take it for a stroll through the woods before I decide anything.

I put a set of Skinner sights on mine.  The extra long barrel has two things going for it.  Looks and longer sight radius.

No way would I cut it. Swap it for a 22 or a Talo if you have to, but cutting it wouldbe like using a crucifix for a coat rack!!  I LIKE short rifles, I LIKE long rifles, average...... not so much.

The Skinner, H&R sight, is a great addition to this wonderful rifle.  Also, $250.00 for this rifle is a STEAL!!!!

I agree 100%. The barrel is too long for hunting in thick woods or treestands. The 22" barrels are usually great shooters and the longer tube just isn't needed for anything.

depends if you shoot black powder and open sights , the long barrel will help. it will give you a longer sight radius and will burn the powder more efficient. black powder more or less goes off like an explosion, smokeless has a defendant/ controiled burn rate,

i have both lengths of barrels would not have the heart to cut the bc 22 is more balanced see no difference in accuracy.usually one shot one kill any way. ;)
