Way too much money. A custom TVM rifle wouldn't be much more than that.

I agree, WAY to much money!  I almost bought one for $239 in the mid- eighties.  Went and looked at it several times, but you can't hunt deer with a .36 in Ohio and the Hawken was gettin' the job done.  I was huntin' tree-rats alot back then and gettin' a few headshots with the old .45.  Even barked 2 (accidently).  Have wanted one ever since...

New in the box...Yeah it stands a good chance of going for that price.

Agree with RHI - it has a chance being NIB with the box.   Really clean used Cherokees have sold in the $350-$650 range for several years, with the short run 36's getting the most.   Even though I could have easily got more for it, I sold my 32 that was as new in the box without a box for $450 about four years ago.   I made a few bucks on it, good enough for me, the buyer was thrilled, so a win win.

$450 for a Seneca 36 ought to go easy enough if its condition warrants.    Long ways from the as NIB Seneca 45 bought about 8-9 years ago for $50 - but I'd rather have the 36.

Ladobe and RHI are on the right track.  Only takes one buyer to have it.  Tax returns are either in hand or on the way and someone is wanting a .32 real bad.  NIB yup it'll sell.  Now in my local market, no it'd gather dust. But the internet is a funny thing when buying and selling things.

I'm with pab1, I think it's too much money. You can get a nice semi custom rifle for that price. Now I'm not saying that the t/c seneca isn't a nice rifle, I would love to have one, But not for that much. Just my 2 cents. ;)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder IB.   They are great little rifles for a standard production model.   One truly new in the box w/box would be pretty rare considering they went out of production in 1989.   Makes it highly collectable for a serious TC collector.    My 32 was bought new and unfired but without box, so I wouldn't have been interested in it at that price just for the box.   Would be interesting to see if any collector runs across this one and snaps it up.

If it was a one year production 36 cal (1987) NIB w/box it could easily get $900 or even more from a collector... would have from me if I was still in the game.   There is not going to be anymore Cherokee's - what's out there is all there is, and there are quite a few serious TC collectors looking for them.

I have been wanting a small caliber caplock for squirrel hunting. Could you guys educate me on the differences of these two. Cherokee & the Seneca other than caliber. I think a 36 might be better for me. However I have really no experience with anything smaller than 50cal.  :)

Thanks,

I cannot speak about those particular rifles, but the calibers I can comment on.  I chose the .32 (flintlock Pedersoli) since the biggest thing I will intentionally hunt with it is Rabbit or squirrel, with the occasional coyote, raccoon, or possum thrown in at a rate of one or two per year.  With muzzle energies over those of the .22 Magnum the .32 works best for me.  A .36 offers more energy, but uses more powder and more lead, this makes it suitable for larger game but does not offer any range advantage.

I had two 32's and two 36's all at the same time... sold the 32's, eventually one 36 and still have the 36 Hawken.   I found that I prefer the 36 because it will do some things better than the 32, yet can also do anything the 32 can and even be loaded down to approximate the 32 if you want.   IMO if the difference in powder and lead useage between a 32 and 36 are a concern, you need to find a different hobby.   IOW, not even someone who shot as much as I did will notice the difference enough to worry about it.    One less quarter pounder a month and the difference is covered.  ;)

Both the Seneca and Cherokee are small rifles, weigh about the same at 6# (2.5# less than a Hawken), but the Seneca is about 3" longer and has brass adornments you may not want for hunting.   The Cherokee replaced the Seneca in 1986 at a cheaper initial cost.   Both were probably originally intended for the ladies and kids.   At almost 6'1" I could shoot either model just fine though - carbine muzzies.    Which one comes down to caliber mostly... if you want a 32 it will have to be a Cherokee - they both had 36 & 45 barrels (although 36 in either model doesn't come available often and get higher prices).   Starting in 1988 the Cherokee could be had with a single trigger in 32 & 45, maybe a little easier to use with a gloved hand in the colder months.   Of the two models and their configurations, even though its smaller I'd rather have a Cherokee 36 than any of the others.   Had my Cherokee been a 36 instead of 32 it wouldn't have been sold.

FWIW-YMMV

Larry,
It does sound like the cherokee in 36 would be ideal. Just how rare is that combination? And what would you expect to pay for one?

Thanks for the info,

Byron,

Because the Cherokee 36 was only offered for one year. either as a complete rifle or as an accessory barrel for the previous years 32's & 45's, not a lot of the 36 barrels would have been made.   Nobody knows how many were made though, not even TC.   I imagine they were still available for a while though until all of them had been sold.

I've seen very few Cherokee 36's come up for sale the last 20 years, and the barrels alone are even much rarer (only saw a couple of barrels being sold, w-a-y back).   Last rifle was probably 3-4 years ago.  I think that last rifle was listed at $650, but the stock had been altered/refinished and the barrel refinished bright, suggesting it had been beat up pretty good and was probably a rust bucket.   Made it undesirable to anybody who didn't want it just for a shooter.   It was relisted several times but I never saw that it had sold, and the seller wouldn't budge on the price.   One before it was around $500 I think, but it had been well used and had some issues.   That was probably 9-10 years ago.   Obviously there could have been others for sale I didn't see or hear of, but you can count on a fairly stiff price of you find a 36 in good condition.

Was the same story with the earliest CVA Squirrel's (c. mid 80's) BTW.   There were 32 Squirrels all over the place for very reasonable prices about 10 years ago.   I got a great deal and paid something like $100 for one that was like NIB, but the 36's were rare and commanded a much higher price.   Found one of them too like NIB about the same time, but it cost me two and a half times what the 32 had.   Fit and finish on them was not even close to a TC, but they were excellent shooters.

HTH,

Larry

If you want it as a collector's item to store away and never touch that may be an OK top dollar price. For a gun to hunt with it is way over the top. You can get a plain custom rifle for that money or assemble a nice kit for half that money. I'd say keep looking.

Fairly common mistake for folks who don't stay in the "thick of it" all the time.   Too bad you were one of them.
