Got a 760 in 257 Roberts

Hi fellow shooter/ hunters. I have just bought a older 760 Rem in 257 Roberts. It has a aluminum butt plate and the old grooved style forend. It is in pretty good shape. I was wondering if this gun has any collector value because of the caliber. I intend to hunt with it next year so I mounted a 2.5x8 Leupold on it. I had to remove the rear sight for clearance. Does any one know of a short rear sight or a filler piece to fill the slot in the barrel? thanks for any info any of you may have about this gun. If there is no collector value I may shorten the barrel to carbine length. :cb2:  Gary

760's in 257 Roberts are worth good$ even if "hunter "condition.. Would not consider shortening barrel if mine...

The .257 is a rare one indeed. If you don't mind me asking, where did you find yours? I have only come across one and the gun shop wanted high $ for it.

That is the same version 760 I used to own in .30-06. The only .257 Roberts I have ever seen in a Remington 760 is still possessed by the 70 year old man who bought it new, and the rifle is just like yours, the old style.
A nickel can be cut and gound to fit that slot pretty nicely. Used to be, Brownell's offered blued steel inserts for closing the slot.
BTW, that old 06 760 was very accurate and quite solidly built.

Yep you don't see too many 257's ya got a keeper. First off    DO  NOT   cut that barrel next be carefull when removing that rear site you got good advice as where to get the blank also midway and natchz carry's them. Share with us what you gave for it .

You might want to buy a folding sight to replace the factory sight.  That is what I did with my 760.  Having taken a hard fall in the woods and screwed up a scope in the process I found the folding sight to be a usable option.  That way you fill in the space and still have a sight.  My local gunshop ordered it for me.

Hello fellow shooters, I just got back from a weekend of closing down our Georgia hunting camp for the off season. I appreciate the replys to my questions With the info that I recieved I will not be cutting the barrel but I will keep on the lookout for a factory carbine length 760.
I paid 170.00 for the rifle at a buddy"s pawn shop, from what I am hearing I did good. I found that the 2.5 x 8 is a good match for this rifle and I was able to mount it very low- I can"t wait till next October. Thanks again, Gary

One Hundred Seventy-five, that is one great deal for a 760 in a fine caliber.  I have no need for another rifle, but if I came across that deal I would have a hard time passing it up.  

Over the years I have been with a number of hunters that have been very successful with the .257 Roberts and the .257 Roberts Improved.  A fine deer cartridge at one great price.

Regarding a slot blank filler, Lyman sells theirs #12 for $6.50 or you can get the #16 adjustable folding sight for $13.25.  You can find these items at:

$175, does he have another one. I recently turned back into a broke college student, but for that price I would find the money for 2 of them if I had to.

I have been hunting and shooting for 25 years and this may be the first time I have a gun that I will not lose $$$ on if I decide to sell someday :-D  :yeah: But first I must drop a deer with it.
