...and the republican control of congress! That seems to be the best hope for this country-gridlock.

DANG NABIT.-I can't believe one can find conflicting information on the internet. I thought all internet info was 100% correct. I guess I'll have to better scrutinize what I read from now on, no matter what the source.

"...and the republican control of congress!"

It worked, I'd go for that!

But:
To summarize – among Presidents from 1929 to the present, Democrats produced faster economic growth than Republicans with quite a margin to spare.  Additionally, both Democrats and Republicans in the Oval Office were more likely to produce faster economic growth the greater the percentage of years in their term that the Democrats controlled Congress.

So then...Obama had a democrat controlled congress to start with...where is all of this economic growth at? Is it currently in shipment? Held up at customs? Where?

Believe me.  GWB increased the debt the most because he rammed the bailout bill through congress--in 2008, people!

He (GWB) rammed it through a Dem congress and Dem senate... Senator Obama agreed with it as well.  We acknowledge Bush was very socialist on this.  Obama then took control of the Dem congress and Dem senate and accelerated bailouts.  It does not matter that Bush called himself a republican or what anyone calls anyone.   What matters is Bush and the Dem congress spent way too much, Obama and a Dem senate spent way more....all bad....why argue about anything?  Socialists come in many forms and party names...makes no difference to me.  Bush bad, Obama much worse...who's next?
Yes Obama and the Dems spent more in a shorter time than Bush and the dems...my take on it is for sure get rid of the Dems in congress, you could throw in the handful of republicans to boot out as well, won't bother me none, there was a very small amount of people who would not go along with the spending and nobody probably knows their names.
And here we are trying to figure out who was worse on spending ?  Anyone looking at the Dems in congress under both  GWB and Obama?  They are the pits for sure.  Worse than either of the presidents cause they wrote it all.  If it was never written or voted on would not have mattered who the president was.

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Junior...GWB "rammed" it through a Democrat congress and senate ?  What a bunch of wusses those Dems were !

Of course, the "bailouts" were bad enough..but a trillion dollar "stimulus" thrown away with almost NO jobs produced is TOTALLY ridiculous !  Things like SOLYNDRA and battery manufacturers making batteries for "stimulated" electric cars nobody would buy, doesn't seem to be an intellectual requirement.
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Can we imagine a speaker of the house who coaches congress to "vote for a bill so we can find out what's in it" ?

Even worse; more than a couple hundred saps did just that..passed a bill of which they had practically NO knowledge !!!

Kimber45,

I went to a government school in a small rural town in Tennessee; small enough that the teachers were able to give the students any extra assistance.   And, truth be told, Dole is actually a pineapple.

You can spin the numbers all that you want.Clinton signed the FREE TRADE AGREEMENT.This single act probably had more affect on the debt than anyone realizes. The damage done to our economy didn't show up during his term.

I doubt that you can find many economists that would agree that restricting trade with unfair tariffs is a good idea.  It's true that the US was a little too anxious to sign trade agreements that were less than fair, but after some of those agreements were signed, some of our export businesses made out like bandits.  I worked for a company that did very nicely for a while with its exports after the Clinton Free Trade Agreement.

There is no doubt what the result of a tariff war would be; everyone would be losers and probably most of all would be consumers and those who are employed by exporters.  We live in a global economy and no matter how much we would like to be self sufficient, it is not possible.  Striving for better and more fair trade agreements is the only course that makes sense.  You cannot win if you aren't in the race.

The real debt should be a relation between the actual debt owed as a percentage of the GDP.  The debt could grow, but if the economy grew faster, it would allow for more tax revenue.  Does anyone know this figure?

I wish someone would've told me I could've dropped out of government school for a pineapple ... but only if its Maui Gold  ;D

My son is 16 and complains everytime he sees his paycheck ... no taxation without representation! I think he's right, and I'd certainly trust him to vote fiscally conservative over many other folks. Seems to me if you don't have any skin in the game, you probably shouldn't get to say how the money is spent. People who earn money tend to be less casual with how its spent, are less likely to overspend and borrow. I think politicians who never held a job are most likely to give away the money of those who work. Just a thought.

TN, good point on the politicians spending someone else's money. With the like's of Polosi,Schumer's,Kennedy's, and, the Obama's, if you never held a job that forced you to watch how you spend a buck, they've never had the training on how to manage it. How many people in today's world, are having a tough time getting by on putting $50-$70 in a gas tank to go to work, or make a payment of some kind. gypsyman

US Debt reached 100% of GDP on August 4, 2011. GDP for 2011 was slightly under 13 Trillion, and projected to be slightly over 13 Trillion in 2012, while debt is 15.2 Trillion presently.

No nation that ever passed the 100% line ever came back, to my knowledge.
