I do morally support the Marine for sticking to what he believes is right, AND MAYBE HIS SACRIFICE WILL bring attention However, that said, he is probably going to lose this one lawfully in the courts and the penalties can be very still stiff. I have to agree with YT on this one. NY and NYC gun laws suck, and they suck for everyone across the board.
NY gun laws are some of the strictest in the US, and NYC are even worse than NY state itself.
If folks don't like the laws in NYC they need to apply pressure to have them changed.
As crappy as it sounds , he should take the plea bargain, or try and negotiate a better deal. Or perhaps with enough national attention NYC may just want it to all go away quietly if it is in NYC political best interest. But I seriously doubt it, and they may do just the opposite hold this marine up as an example all are treated equally under NYC law.
It's crappy , like I said , but he better hunker down and be ready to take the incoming flak if he is going to fight this one to the end , it may be a long haul , it certainly is not going to be pretty, and the outcome of this firestorm will most likely not end in his favor.
Me personally, After I garner as much national attention spot light on the issue I could muster, I would take the deal , pay the fine , and negotiate my community service to hosting seminars to educate NY citizens on how crappy the gun laws are in the state and why they need to be changed.
Just an FYI side note : lucky he was not tagged in Massachusetts -
Massachusetts has enacted one of the most restrictive gun laws in the Nation imposing a mandatory one year jail sentence for anyone illegally possessing a firearm, loaded or unloaded, ``on his person or under his control in a vehicle.''
They only allow non-residents to bring handguns into the state for competition, exhibition or hunting.
