load for 30-06 barnes tsx bt 180gr
« on: February 23, 2012, 12:16:33 PM »
Hey guys looking to start reloading and wondering if any of you have loaded up this bullet and what your results were. I'm looking for a heavy-hitting bullet with mild to moderate recoil. I hardly ever shoot past 50 yards and rarely past 100. so speed isn't a huge factor. looking to land in the 2300-2500 fps range.

I'd start by using Barnes data, they don't show anything less than 2464fps, in my experience with the TSX and TTSX, they're usually more accurate using the warmer data, but not always, each gun is different.  ;)

Been there and to a half dozen other sites and looked at the barnes book which has about 15 loads for the 180. Just wanted to know what people were using in the h&r.

I've killed deer, caribou and moose using the Barnes 180gr. TSX. It will get the job done very well. If your gun shoot it accurately, no other bullet is needed.

I've used Barnes all copper bullets in one form or another in all my 30 caliber rifles. I prefer the lighter weight bullets. I have used the 165 grain XLC in my 30-06. Worked fine. Contrary to popular belief, the heavier bullets work really well. I have seen penetration tests that show this. The best explanation for the good performance is that velocity is held under the threshold where the four front petals sometimes shed during penetration. While this often happens at faster speeds, I will say also that when it does, it is usually at the point that other bullets stop penetrating anyway so it is not a concern to me when it does (usually with lighter faster bullets). Besides, the remaining shank creates a nice wound channel itself.

Kimber45 and cjrjck what powder and charge did you use? I have some H414 and am wondering if I need something else and what charge to start at.
