Tired of too many...
« on: February 24, 2012, 10:46:44 AM »
I got alot of rifles.  I don't shoot them.  Range is $10 per gun.  So I've decided to shoot just one until I got it right.

Doing ladder loads with different powders and bullets each trip.  I know it's alot of work and waiting for the barrel to cool.  But at least I'll know which ones shoot good with what.

Lucked into finding my 30-30 Marlin likes 170gr Federal factory.  So that's done.  Now to try the Handi's.

OK... just can't go to the range with just one gun.  So I'll do two.  Settle on 454 and 45-70 for my first try.  No, decided to do cast only for awhile with them.

So... maybe the new 30-30 barrel and new 357... or the 223 again, or...

Arrrrgghh...!!  Getting tired just thinking about it.  Maybe I'll just go out in the back yard with a pellet gun. Let's see... the Crosman 177 pistol, no maybe the Diana 22 I just got.  No, that shoots OK, so maybe the new PCP custom.

Arrrrrggh...!!!  Where's my sling shot.?
Think as if you LIFE depends on it... IT does..!  Be Well...

Instead of sling shot, try making a good old leather pocket sling with two 3' leather thongs.  I made one and it's a gas.  Just make sure no one will get hit with your misfires at first.  I can hit a pumpkin at 20 yards now often, so I take that and pick up range rocks and throw em outta the main area to avoid ricochets.  ;)  I'm with CW though, I have had as many as 12 so that'd be pricey.  hehe

Wow. Don't tell my wife. She will get rich. I shoot out behind the house. Only 75 yards unless I go to the field next door :D   Like yourself, I would have a problem deciding what to take.

Yesterday went out back with the boys, Started shooting a Rem 30-06 then Handi .308 snuck out followed by the Handi .445sm and Ruger .44

Wow, the only fee at my range is the effort to tote the stuff up to the shooting bench from my house. I generally shoot three to five each trip up there. Heck it's nearly a 20 yard walk and half that is a bank I have to walk up. Unless of course I ride up on my fourwheeler.

Any Wyatt has to shoot most every time I do so his little 22 rifle and ammo has to go also.

So, would a Handi with 3 barrels count as one or 3 guns?

Yeah, that's what I was wondering too. Take one frame/stock set and a passel of barrels (assuming they all fit the frame). Put one barrel on the frame, pay the 10 and tell 'em the other bag has tools, targets, spotting scope, sandwiches, soft drinks etc. Heck I get hungry and thirsty when I go to the range!

Is that one gun on the line at a time for $10?   Or does that count the other five in the trunk too?

I think I would just keep one on the line at a time and periodically go to my truck to replace it when done - for no additional charge.

That range fee would make me go somewhere else.

My range is about the same as Graybeards.  I suppose if I lived where I couldn't shoot I'd be the usual guy with one .22, a 12 ga., a "deer rifle" and perhaps a handgun.  I thank God I'm not.  I made a choice when I was young to find work where I wanted to live and not live where I had to work.  That choice probably cost me thousands upon thousands over the years, but it bought me happiness.

I have a 100 yard range in the back yard. I have a 6' bank to shoot into. I set my targets low so I have 4' above them and make sure my shoots will not go over it. I move in close and then back up as I am sure where the bullets fly. I store the shooting bench and bags in the shed that is about 25 steps from the back door where I set up at is 25' from the back door. That is the good. The terrain is not flat, it slopes down hill maybe 25' for the 100 yards and when it rains heavy, it floods for 2-3 days, until my drain runs it off. That is the bad. I haul out a couple of rifles and ammo at a time. I walk down to the target so between the exercise walks and shooting two rifles, the rifles cool down between strings. When I am satisfied with those two, I grab a couple more to tune up.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

Can you guys imagine having to be put on a waiting list at the rage.  If it is close to the opening of deer season down here in the bayou city and you slept a little late it can happen.  They tag your gun, usually they put on the sling, to try to keep you honest.

Hello,

I am blessed to have a 500 yard range at my house and if I charged $10 a gun, I could about buy a gun a month from now on. I have a few friends who have really been filling my clay bank with lead lately. Let's see, just last weekend, 3 guys and a chap came over. All of the following guns were fired: NEF .243, .308, 45/70; AR-15; AR-22; .22 Hornet; 3 ea. .22; 2 ea. .357 pistol; .40 S&W; 2 ea. .45; 30 carbine pistol and 2 shotguns. So, after a little arithmatic, I see that I would be due $180. But, NAH, I like sharing my range with the gun nuts I hang with, and I know for sure that they are shooting in a good safe place with absolutely NO CHANCE of getting in trouble. I realize that people who run public ranges must charge enough to allow them to continue staying open and at $10 a gun, they should be making a profit. I know that few people have the good fortune to live on a private 500 yard range, so I will continue to share it with those who are responsible and respectful. Have a great safe day.

In town they have a 300 yard range.  Free just furnish your own targets and stand.  Out on the Tanana River bed, same thing.  Bring my own target and frame.  1500 yards easy.  Both places we are shooting towards an Army Artillery impact area, that is OFF LIMITS, so we don't have to worry about a ricochet or miss going any where that might impact others.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
