357 Max lead bullets
« on: February 26, 2012, 09:21:09 AM »
Did a search and found some scattered info.  I wanted to find out what folks are using for lead bullets in their max.  Hard cast?  Gas check I assume?  Brand?  Want to stick in the 180 gr weight and will be loading with lil'gun or H110.  Thoughts? Thanks guys.

I like the Ranch Dogs.  Mine drops about a 188 gr bullet on an average.  Check out the post in "Handi 357mag"

i have found that if you keep below 1600fps and use hard-cast boolits,
you don't need GC's..........but thats me and my findings, i'm sure others here will
over-rule that'un.........hey, thats life ;D ;) 8)

Beartooth Bullets, 185 grain, flat nose, gas checked, .359 diameter. over 20 grains of H110.

Very accurate, deer hammers !  I speak from experience.   ;)

RCBS 35-200 flat point. They drop 210 from the mold, cast from range scrap, water quenched and gas checked.

Nice boolit.

I was looking at those.  Seems like flat nose is the way to go.  I hae to get my lead pot back from my old man.  He keeps grabbing it to make fishin' jigs.  I like to fish and all but what a waste of lead!

My Maxi has a 24" 1 in 16" barrel.  The Beartooth bullet gave me just under 1" groups ahead of 28gr A1680, just over 2000fps, so was my hunting load for this year, no luck tho. Been working with the RD359190 which gives me 190 plus or minus 1/2 gr w/GC installed, tumble lubed w/LLA, sized .359.  Started with 26gr A1680 which gave me just over 1" groups, moved up by 1/2gr increments watching the groups shrink.  28gr for me must be the magic number 'cause the group went from 7/8" spread C/C to a group 9/16 by 1/4".  Think I'll stop there.  Still getting a fair amount of soot, which indicates that the case is still not quite sealing.  Haven't chrono'ed this load.  Might I suggest that you read the latest data from Western Powders, also visit www.357Maximum.com and read the pressure data--it seems that this cartridge has some sensitivity to seating depth and OAL with this powder--deep seating seems to jack up pressures.  Goatwhiskers
