Found some at a gun show two weeks ago.  I bought all he had, one bag of 50 for $45.  I don't like the price, but you can't find it.

Nope and never will. I remember many years ago I was involved in some informal shooting competitions and there was a father/son team there. The dad shot a .338 Win. Mag with 250 grain bullets and the son a 7STW with 160s I believe.

Not so many shots into the shooting both were flinching and both had raw red shoulders. They toughed it out using towels folded so they had several layers of material between the butt and their shoulders.

When it was over tho their shoulders looked almost like hamburger. Ain't no way I'm putting my already messed up shoulder thru what I saw happen to those two. No one else there had bruised shoulders just those two rifles. I think the .338 was a Ruger One and the STW a Remington 700.

Bill i shot a few rounds out of this one the other day. Its a stainless syn bdl detachable mag gun. they came from the factory with a muzzle break. The buddy who sold it to me is still looking for the cap to eliminate the break as im not a fan of the ear pounding you get with a ported rifle and recoil in a rifle doesnt bother me but i have to say that shooting this thing was about amazing. The load was a 150 bt at about 3500 fps and it probably had less felt recoil then a 270 shooting 130s. It defineatly made more noise!!! It would be a bear to shoot like that in the field without ear protection. even without the porting im sure its not a darned bit worse then a 300 win or wby mag and they sure dont bother me. By the way the loads i shot were from the buddy i bought it from and it shot those into a 3 shot group not much bigger then a 1/2 inch.

GB, over the years we have shot thousands of rounds though mag. rifles from the .257 wea. up to the .458...so far no beat up shoulders, no flinching..but one of the worst rifles for recoil was a 77 in .338....

Not for me.  I have had three rotator cuff surgeries for seperated tendons.  Went to doc for the 4th but it was a pinched nerve in my neck and not my shoulder again.  Treated with anti inflamatory med rather than the knife.  He said no archery or golf.  I've long ago given up both.  Magnums are safe queens at my house.

Charles, that is a tough thing to face...I suppose that limits the shotgunning you are able to do also..I love my magnum rifles for serious big game hunting and long range winter coyote shooting...while they are not necessary for much of the hunting in the U.S., due to the limited range, or size of the game..., I really like them for hunting big deer...lately I have found a stand in the strip mine country of the east coast, where I can cover lots of country with my vantage point...here a flat shooting rifle of 140 to 165 grains offers me some exciting hunting...There are half a dozen spots where I could take a stand in the woods and knock off a buck at 50 yards, but sitting in the forest is diffcult for me after living and  hunting the west for so many years...sorry to hear of the damage to the shoulder.... :-[

I need rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders but don't have the money to afford it and don't want to take the time out of my life it requires for recovery. No doubt if I live a lot more years I'll have no choice but to have the surgery tho.

I've never seen shoulders in the shape those two guys shoulders were in on that shoot. I have no explanation as to why it happened but that was some nasty looking mess made of both their shoulders.

even made it milder today bill. I fit it to a LSS stock i had out in the shop. took a bit of fileing and grinding to fit the stock to the detachable mag but it ended up working great. Sure looks better in that stock then the black plastic one and it probably adds a good 1/2 lb to the weight. thing should be about like shooting a .22 now  ;)

Sounds very good. The 7STW is a great one!

I see that Midway USA only has a brand called "Quality" 7mmSTW brass. What rifle do you have this on Lloyd? How long is your barrel? Reason is, I shoot a 7mm RUM on a modified Remington 721 action. It had the bolt face opened up, an M16 extractor fitted and an "in-line" magazine. This rifle only has a 25" barrel, but I got that 140 TTSX purring at over 3600fps with 96.5gr Retumbo and a Fed 215M primer, in Remington brass. I had a 7mmSTW once, and I could never get that kind of velocity! ha. I gave that rifle to a good friend, and some handloads I had made up with 140 BT going about 3350 or so. When he shot them up, I ordered $200 worth of ammo for him from A-Square....total crap, wouldn't even chamber in his rifle! They tried them in his cousins rifle, no dice there either. This was over 10 yrs ago, but in fairness, poor ol Art Alphin was being harrassed by Big Brother back then, it messed him all up.
All this is to say....if you can, consider having that rifle converted to the 7mm RUM...much easier to deal with, much flatter shooting. That's just me, of course, and this rifle is the only long range deer/elk rifle I own. I prefer to haul around a lighter, smaller caliber, like my Grandson's .240W or a Mountain Rifle in 30.06. However, I have never had a RUM cartridge from the 7mm to 300 to 338 that would not shoot bullets into bughole groups at warp speed! ha. I have a friend in Texas that has one of the old original Mod 700 24" bbl .264 Winmags. He loves it, has killed alot of game with it. He started out with the 140 factory loads, then a mutual friend loaded him up a bunch of ammo loaded with the 140 Partition. It clocks alot faster than the factory ammo. So...if you don't have a good smith to do your "conversion", send it out here to my guy who did mine! ha.

A gunsmith in this area has made a name for himself "locally" building rifles, mainly in 7STW with Lilja barrels & M700 actions. Most are 27", a couple in 26". They are getting over 3500 with the 140BT. One guy tried the RUM, he gained little, but their STW's are fast anyway. I think the RUM would be a butt kicker with a 1-8 tube & 180 Berger's, but that's another story.

Jim im friends with the guy i got it from and he showed me 5 shot groups with 6 differnt bullets that were 3/4s of an inch or less so it does shoot. He had chrono readings from 140 bts that went 3495. the barrel is a 26 in ported barrel so in all reality its a 25. I doubt id ever consider having it rechambered to 7 ultra. I didnt buy it thinking it was an ultra just like i wouldnt buy a 7 rem thinking it would run with a stw. If anything id buy an ultra too. I think though when i buy an ultra i will proably go with a 300 or even a 338. In all reality the 7stw is about grossly overbore and the 7 ultra is even worse. case that big could use a bit more caliber and im getting a bit overloaded with 7mags. Ive got 3 7mm rem mags a 7mm weatherby mag and now the stw. Funny thing is Jim probably the biggest thing this gun will ever shoot it whitetail does at long range doing crop damage shooting. My back wont allow for any long trips to hunt anymore and id never use it around here during normal hunting season as my shots seldom are more then a 100 yards then. Another bit advantage to me is brass. Ultra mag and stw brass is rare as hens teeth!! At least with the stw i can use the 8mag brass i already have plenty of. Ive been loading for the 8mag for over 20 years.

I certainly understand, ha. I guess I was surprised to see that 7STW brass was hard to find now. I had a friend down in Texas, again, who had the only 8mm Remmag I've ever seen. He said it kicked like crazy, but that it was an awesome round on whitetail, ha. That's all he ever shot with, well, hogs and Javalinas too.
I was "given" this 7RUM. or I would never have had one, really. I like both the 300 and the 338 RUMs very much, especially the 338, but using the lighter bullets, i.e. Nosler 180 Accubond. I will admit to shooting neither one w/o a muzzlebrake, but it's the nature of the beast.
I really like the .257 Weatherby for deer size critters, and was considering a Mod 700 CDL SF in one when my smith up and gives me this 7RUM! So that settled me down. I had a 6.5/284 that got close to .264WM speed with the Nosler 120BTs and it was spectacular! Well, good luck on finding some brass for your 7 STW. I will be in Negaunee in about 3 weeks, gonna slay that big Russian Boar. Oh yea, my 9.3x62 flaked out on me, so I'm using my .35 Whelen Ackley Improved and the Woodleigh 310 softs, ha. Might as well... :P

Jim you need to put down those rifles. A pig should be shot with a sixgun ;)  As to recoil i guess I never felt the 8mag was that bad. Actually i think my 300 wby has a sharper recoil that is more unpleasant.

Sorry Lloyd, I realized I had repeated myself about the .257 CDL/ 7RUM info above. I can't seem to keep up with who I posted to about what... I must be "distracted", surely it has nothing to do with getting older, ha.

I used to shoot heavy revolvers, but my joint replacement in my shooting wrist is a problem now, so, no more. ha. Besides, not sure I want to tangle with a 400# Russian with a handgun ( pig or soldier!) ha.

heck jim ive shot a number of them with 44 mags, specials, and 45 colts running 250 cast bullets at a 1000 fps and never found them lacking in killing power even at those levels and chances are those pigs will be more in the 200 lb range then 400.

Well, I booked for the "Alpha" Boar, the herd boss hog. If the biggest one on the place is just 200#, I will be ticked, ha. No matter, I'm out for blood and and a set of cutters! ha.
BTW Gunbroker has a NIB 1997 Mod 700 classic in .280...look at that thing, it's pretty!

Id love to have that 280. rem classics are probably my favorite factory rifle with the exception of #1s. Ive got a win featherweight in 280 but if money wasnt so tight id be bidding on that classic. What id really like to find is a classic in 300 h&h

Hey Lloyd, I was scrolling down the post and was going to tell you about the 8mm cases, but never mind, I see you have that covered. Oh well it's the thought that counts....right.

I have one chambered on one fo the early Sendero's with a laminate stock. I picked it up used for a great price, and figured if it wouldn't shoot I would simply rebarrel it to a 300 RUM. Well I managed to pick the right time to check for ammo as Midway had some of the Federal loaded 150gr Nosler Solid Bases on clearance for about $18 a box. I figured I would give it a shot, and found it put them into 1/2" groups at 200yds. That afternoon I ordered the rest of what they had in stock. I still have around 6 or 8 boxes sitting on the shelf, and try as I could, I haven't been able to duplicate the velocity nor accuracy of that ammo. It's listed at 3350 on the box and does that easily from the 26" barrel.

Here is a couple of shots I pulled off a video clip from my friends place. I was working on rebedding a trailer when he said "look at all those hogs, you got your rifle"?

Well I had the STW in the truck and set up right along side it prone.

He said "shoot that blonde boar and we'll go after the others later". Well he would never give me the shot I wanted and when my bud called out 385 as the yardage I was a bit hesitant to let one loose on him. Finally he started to feed directly towards us, and I settled the scope right on his whithers, and eased down on the trigger. At the recoil hogs went everywhere, and I couldn't see the blonde boar. My bud said something to the effect, he couldn't believe that shot, and wantd to know where I aimed. I told him, and we rode over to the hog pictured just how we found him laying. Thats when he started mumbling stuff under his breath about not ever wanting to make me mad, LOL

I have a Burris 4.5x14x50 mounted on top with the Ballistic Mil Dot Reticle in it. Sighted in zero at 200yds the dots are calibrated to the actual load I am shooting, and it works out as close as I can hold to 600yds.

This one doesn't kick all that bad at all, and my daughter has even used it a time or two whiel hunting our back pastures for a specific big buck she was after. She never got the buck but she has shot up a box or more of the ammo practicing with it and she don't weigh much over 110 drippin wet.

Good luck with finding the brass, I thnk the last I actually found was over at Lock Stock and Barrel before they went under. Well the last I was willing to spring for anyway. I managed to get something like 2-300 Remingtons, bagged 50 to a bag. I ahve only opened up one bag so far and this spring that rifle is on the list of loads to be worked out before fall. Hopefully with the 500 154gr Bonded blems I also picked up I can find something she likes, as I really want to keep using the 139gr loads in my standard 7mm RM.

Take care, and good luck.

41, great story & thanks for sharing. I wonder if they went to extra effort on those Lam. stocked Sendero's. I have one in 300WM & it is the most accurate factory rifle I have used at longer ranges. Does yours have pressure points even thou it is a Sendero? Mine does & I am afraid to touch it.

A 7STW with that accuracy is a bad boy!!

I did a bedding job on it when I first got it, and do not remember it having the hump. I DID have a .270 in BDL which had it though as well as a 25-06. Neither of them have them now and both will shoot tighter than I can hold.

The STW is awesome for a long range rig. I have been overly impressed with the Federal factory stuff and the 150gr Nolser Solid Base bullets. I have shot hogs as close as 30yds with them and not had anywhere near the meat destruction I have had with other bullets. I managed to pick up a bunch from the Shooters Pro Shop before they went away for the second time, and was hopeful I could work them up into the level I have with the factory stuff. So far no deal.

I will again be looking into this rig here shortly with the 154gr bonded bullets I picked up from Midsouth when they had them for a price I simply couldn't pass on. Something like 500 for 85 bucks. Figured if they didn't shoot in the STW they would make good rounds for the standard 7mm RM and I could move on up to the 160'ish grain pills in the STW.

We'll see, should have some time to work on things around the end of the month or so. Looking forward to putting in some quality time behind the trigger. Sure wished Nosler hadn't dropped those SB's from their line. I personally feel they were about the best bullet going, next to their Partition. No matter what they say, I will never believe that the Ballistic Tip is an equal in performance.

very cool pictures and story 41 man. theres just something about connecting well way the hell out there that does it for me too. Im fortunate in that we do crop damage deer shooting ever year so my season is about 4 months long and i can shoot all the deer i can find and get a chance to shoot many at long range. I cant wait for this year. Ive got the new stw and a new cdl in 257 wby and another new 7 rem mag in a 77 hawkeye for this years playing. Ive never owned a sendero but have shot many and would probably say if pinned down that there the most accurate out of the box rifles ive ever shot.  Mine is just a stainless bdl. Wish it was  sendero though. though the buddy who traded me for it brought over targets he dug out that he shot at 200 yards that were less then an inch! He was shooting 150 sciracos. He said that bullet poleaxed deer out at 300 yards.
