New King's Howitzer build
« on: February 26, 2012, 12:19:05 PM »
I just finished my little King's Howitzer.  The tube is by Bob Gilmor and the wheels are from customwagaonwheels.com.  I based the carriage on information provided in "Military Collector and Historian", the journal of the Company of Military Historians.  No original carraiges have survived, so there is a lot subjective "guessing" as to what these looked like.  The iron work is a mixture of my work and a local blacksmith.  Now I have to make the implements.    I'm looking forward to shooting it, if I can find a range big enough.  Here is a link to more pics.   http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v322/threepdr/Reproduction%20Kings%20Howitzer/

That really looks nice! I've been a fan of King's howitzers for a long time. It looks like you went with the later model that had the beefier trunnions.

Jeff,  the tube is one thing I had little control over.  THe Gilmore tube is about half way between the First and Second Model Kings in wieght.  It is not a perfect copy.  It has two inch trunnions and wieghs about 55lbs.  I think the bore is correct.  The chamber is about 1.4 inches and the bore is 2.9.  He can make the bore any size you want, however.  He tells me lots of folks get them with "Pop Can" bore size.

If you would like to read some background on the King Howitzers, take this link to some CMH articles on the subject.

It is an award for an outstanding post/project given by former moderator Douglas Dickens.  They are sprinkled occasionally through the post archive for particularly noteworthy things.

Simply, it means you are in good company.

The Kewpie is given for a great Cannon picture I like.

You might make a great cannon and post a lousy picture and not get a Kewpie.  But if it is a really great cannon or cannon project and a lousy picture you might get a Kewpie.

You might post a lousy looking cannon in a  great picture and get a kewpie.

I Think Zulu has the most, but he is going have to step it up to get another.  By most standards  his work is outstanding.  Since the rest of us can't do work like his and every he does is incredible, in order for him to get another kewpie, he has to one up him self.

Dom has a few also.

I think all the sponsors have got  Kewpies.

I got a kepwie for my SAMCC cannon by acclimation.

There some retro active kewpies....In fact there is one person who complained about not getting a kewpie, who if he had gone back a few years when he made his original post introducing his cannon, would find that he has a kewpie. He had made his post before I started the Kewpie.  I never did tell him when he was sniveling  about the kewpie...just enjoyed listening to him whine.

Only a couple of people have ever got a Kewpie for an attachment, it just looses something when given as attachment. I only give Kewpies now when pictures are posted.

I believe in the past year I have also given  a Kewpie for a none cannon picture.  I don't remember what it was but I think that was the only none cannon kewpie.

Why a kewpie.  Kewpie dolls use to be given as prizes at carnivals.

Several years ago Tracy put up one of his famous contest , which he hasn't done for  while.  We had to indentify where certain pictures were taken from clues he provided.  I used my skills as an Intel analyst and researched everything and kicked butt.  For example I enlarged his pictures, looked up the phone number in a business window in the background and googled the number.  THe hardest one was the Doubleday cannon on a rock oput ioa lake in NY.   Tracy proclaimed me the winner, and I asked if I won a kewpie. Several weeks later her comes a Kewpie Doll in the mail from SeaCoast Artillery.   My wife and i got a great laugh out of that.

I took some pictures of the Kepwie doll and posted for all to see.

Later to pass the honor winning  a prize for a great cannon, I created the you win a Kewpie award.

Bottom line you post a pictue of a cannon that impresses me, and you might win a kewpie.

Mark,
You did a fine job with the carriage, that's an admirable rig.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

I finally had a chance to test fire the little howitzer with some blanks.  My grand kids did the honors with fuse instead of a lintstock for safety reasons.  The first two shots were with 1.5 oz of cannon grade powder in an foil cartridge.  The last shot is the same charge, but with two cups of potting soil in a foil cylinder rammed on top of the charge.  The sound was three fold louder.

Isn't a foil cylinder full of dirt a projectile?

Depends if the cylinder bursts in the bore.

The potting soil is very light, mostly organic and biodegradable.  The foil shreds before it leaves the bore.  Perfect wadding if you want to leave very little down range.

Nice Kings Howitzer. I just finished my Kings Fire Cracker Barrel a few weeks ago.

I was inspired by the ones I seen in my fathers  Cannon LTD magazines.
