Super dangerous barrel on Ebay
« on: February 27, 2012, 12:27:54 PM »
I thought I had seen some poorly made and dangerous barrels for sale on Ebay but this one might be the worst.
If I'm reading the ad right it is 2.6" bore with only a .5" wall thickness.

I just sent him some questions.....
How is the breech attached?
Does it have a reduced chamber?
Is this seamless tubing?
should be interesting to see if he answeres.....

Having seen WAY too many of these on Ebay, I have decided to offer some WAY over engineered thunder mugs. I am using 3.5" stock, 1" bore and the minimum OD is 3.25". In my blurb I was thinking of mentioning that some of the "Signaling Cannon" offered are nothing but pipe bombs waiting to happen, but I think my blurb will be "My over engineering is your safety" It will be on a base 5.5"x7.5" base that I plug weld on with 5 3/8" plug welds.

As a New Yorker, I'd like to apologize for this guy, but please remember Albany is where we send all our idiots.

One thing I've noticed, the ones that tend to end up being unsafe also look like they make it in 10mins. It's like people realize it's junk and don't bother putting in the effort to make it a showpiece.

I sent him the below questions
Your ad says 2.60" ID
What is the OD at the breech?
What is the distance from the rear of the barrel to the fuse hole?

Here is what I got for a reply
The wall is 1/2" as add 1" rear- fuse 2&1/2". Breach rear wall 1&5/16" construcred 1984 discharged approx 15 times. Renovated, included adding weld 7018, retap larger clean out & new 5/8" grade 8 bolt, new paint black with silver flake, clear coat very clean like new

Geez, I can't even understand his explanation :o

Here's what I received from the seller in answer to the questions that I asked him:

What construction standards did you follow to build this signal cannon? Was it built in accordance with either AAA or NSSA standards? What does it have for a breech plug and how is the breech plug attached to the barrel? How is the cleanout constructed? Please include more photos with details on your listing.

"1&5/16" breach wall solid 7018 stringer weld . 1/2" solid seamless wall. Standard for wall is 3/8" . 5/8" bolt plug grade 8 thread 1&5/16" in deep . constructed approx. 1984 . Discharged approx. 15 times. Has been renovated and re painted. Very clean like new black with silver spec, clear coat. Renovation included more weld added, clean out plug new and re tap larger, re paint."

Which is to say, this may be a good technique to use in the future when there are cannons listed there for sale of questionable strength.

hmmmmm.

These are turned from 3.5" stock, max OD is approximately 3.4", minimum is  3.25". Bore is 1". 1/8" fuse vent is 1.5" from the bottom of a 7" tube. A 5.5x7.5" base plate is plug welded to the bottom with five 3/8" plug welds. My answer to the pipe bombs on Ebay.
