Ordering a new barrel - what to do with the old one?
« on: February 28, 2012, 12:30:50 PM »
I took my .223 out today and it shot well with the 55 Gr. but the 69 Gr. bullets were keyholeing even at 50 yards.  I called H&R and the newer barrels are 1:9 not 1:12 as my 2000 model is.  That will allow me to shoot the heaver rounds.  I will probably order the 243 along with it. I have decided on the longer Bull Barrels for both, as I sit and shoot mostly and neither gun will be toted through the woods.  My question is:  Is there an market for the used .223 22" 1:12 twist barrel?  H&R says that barrels must be fitted at the factory but I have heard of gunsmiths being able to headspace the barrels to the actions.

Put it up for sale in the H&R Classifieds, thousands of barrels have been sold there over the years, see the FAQs and Help sticky on barrel fitting.  ;)

Keep it---- you can have more them one barrel per frame...

the 1 in 12    223 is not the most up to date  == I like mine  - a few things slow twist will works better.. like cast bullets, or some fast twist don't like light weight bullets

The 357 is another fun barrel I'm glad I have.

Someplace  here there is a thread about the best and worst H&R barrels

i have 1-12 twist barrel i thought of selling but   i decided to keep mine and chopped it to 16/12 '' nice handy little bugger and just as accurate going to try the 62grn bullet in it. but my 1-9 twist handy key holes them bad.also shot some 45 grn hornets in my shorty 1-12 twist shoots excellent.usually shoot 55 grns in both work good enough. ;D

before you condemn that barrel, what are you going to be doing with a .223 that requires heavier bullets, when you are also getting a .243??

Not really condemning the barrel.  I purchased the gun to alleviate a coyote problem I am having.  I have recently acquired some 40 GR VMax ammo that should work very well to do that.  The "other" .223 barrel may be unnecessary when I get the .243, which is destined for hogs and maybe deer.  I may just keep it and get the .243 and end up with something to cover all my bases.

55 grain .223 will do the job, heck 45 grain .223 dia bullets from my K-Hornet do a great job out to 150 yards.  If I need to reach further I grab the .25'06  :D
