8mm conversion
« on: February 28, 2012, 05:05:13 PM »
I have an 8X57mm Turkish Mauser that has had its bolt turned down, the receiver drilled and tapped for a set of scope mounts and a Buehler low swing safety installed.  It's a great shooter as is.   Now I happened to see a couple of articles on rechambering 8 mm's to 8mmx06 and it looks rather appealing.  Is this gun built strong enough for this conversion and is it a ream job that one can do themself?  Thanks a lot ahead of time for any insight, Peshtigo.    ;D

You can do that, but why? Then you'll have to buy another (rather expensive) die set, for very little additional power. And you won't be able to buy any factory ammo. The 8X57 works really well as is, especially when you handload for it to CIP pressure specs. I would vote to leave it alone.

Agreed.  You should be able to find a 30-06 for less than your cost to convert.  It is not a do it yourself job unless you are an experienced lathe operator.

Thanks guys for the quick response and insight.  You are correct in that there would be little gain for the costs involved.  Since the gun is already a good shooter I would be better served to leave well enough alone and try for a little improvement with handloads.  Peshtigo

I've done a Turk to 8mm/'06, and while it isn't as complicated as rebarreling, it can get expensive even doing the work yourself, (floating reamer holders will set you back a "C" note). As to loading, its gonna be a .30-'06 as far as data is concerned, and a .30-'06 die set can be converted for the price of an extended 8mm expander ball and new collet. Factory ammo is available, but likely you won't find it off any shelf. Even the magazine box might need extended to handle the longer round.
Its an interesting project, but if I hadn't already had a good Yugo 8mm, I don't think I'd have bothered.
