« on: February 29, 2012, 10:05:19 AM »
Are these still in production? I see the barrels going for a rather high price! I know where their is a brand new pallet wood model in the box for 235$ out the door. Mark

I think they are. I just bought a new one not that long ago (complete rifle) I saw that the barrels may be purchase as well. Tim would be the guy to answer this for sure.

If I didn't already have one, I'd buy it.  I think it is a more than fair price.  My wife and I have had a total of five 7mm-08 Handis.  Three standard contour previously and 2 superlights now.  All were and are shooters.

Both the standard and compact are shown in the current online catalog:

Thanks for the info guys! I think I might pick it up, the price is right . The only other 7mm I have is a .284 win Model 88 that is still in the box. The 7 is the one caliber that I never realy got excited about. Maybe time to change that !!

Buy it! Buy it! Did I say buy it!

I believe that the only reason you never got excited about the 7mm is because it's still in the box.  I felt that way for years, then I bought a Rem 700 in 7x57Mauser.  Now I love the 7mm's.  I even hold out hope that H&R will provide an accessory barrel or complete Handi in that caliber.  Or maybe a certain member here on GBO will sell his 7x57 Handi to me.

Until then, I have a Handi 7mm-08. 8)

I was at the local sporting goods store last week looking around hoping maybe they had a 7mm-08 handi, and checking the used rack, and ran across a like new '84 (by the serial number) m77 ruger in 7x57, so I bought it, aint shot it yet, but the more I read about that cartridge the more I think I'm gonna like it.

LEAVE THAT 88 IN THE BOX!!!
Go buy the handi and enjoy the 7mm it's a wonderful caliber!

That 88 will bring hi dollars down the road when your son sells it because he needs hub caps on his "classic" 2005 Cheby.  ::) LOL...

The 7x57 becomes a whole new animal when you reload for it.  Most factory ammo, doesn't do it justice, it's loaded down because of all the older Spanish Mausers chambered in 7x57, out there.
Don't get me wrong the factory 7x57 ammo will easily take deer, but 7x57 reloads......,...Wowee!

I got quarter sized groups at 100yards, with the factory Remington loads.

:) Shipped a receiver in to have one of those 7MM-08 lite barrels fitted on Feb. 18th. It should be at my house when I get there this evening. Under 2 weeks. Can't complain about that.

The 7mm-08 and the .243 are both .308 family.  Why does the seven have such a great performance reputation as opposed to the .243's poor one?  The 7mm-08 almost decides the rimmed/rimless controversy by itself.  The .243 is one factory Handi I don't have, and a lot of it has to do with its poor press.

It's just my opinion but I say it's because of its widespread popularity!

Much like the venerable 30-30, it's so widely used people seem to COM-plain more than PRO-claim.

The 243 is a great little caliber when you use your head and limit its use and range. Use it (OR any thing) beyond it's capabilities and the "problem" is that persons judgment NOT the instrument. But people or most people lack accountability when it's time to judge ones self so the blame goes to the instrument.

I took the 243 plunge about 1988. I bought a brand new Winchester Featherweight in 243 with a brand new Leupold 3x9 Matte scope. I worked up a load with a 90g Speer bullet as the 100/105's just would not shoot well. Later I found the Sierra 85hp shot great.
I shot a couple chucks and coyote and two deer (that I remember) with that rifle. One of the deer was my longest offhand shots to date and I am proud of it! It was about 225 yards at a walking buck. I hit him mid ship in the spine. He needed a finisher but he was there when I got to him.

I say try it Peter, a good shooting 243 is a great asset to ones "arsenal"! If we where closer, I would lend you my ultra for a spell!!

I never understood this either, Its a fine cartridge and in the right hands is lethal.
My buddies wife has killed 11 elk with her 243
