Rossi 92 Scope Mount Question
« on: February 29, 2012, 01:37:55 PM »
My understanding is that the Rossi 92 lever action rifles are pretty nice. I've owned a Puma and it was a good rifle. I know that scope mounts can be put on them scout style but does anyone make a side mounted receiver scope mount for these rifles that is solid enough to be reliable ? Reviews on the B-Square mount weren't that good.

The sights on the Rossi 92s are not that good.  The front sight is way too high and should be replaced with a lower sight just to hit paper out to 100 yards.  I have had 4 Rossi 92s and all have been very accurate.  Since it is basically a 100 yard gun there really is no reason to put a scope on a Rossi 92.  You will still need to get it drilled and tapped but a Williams Firesight Front sight with a Williams FP on the rear makes a really dandy weapon that still has the natural balance of the 92.  You may have trouble with open sights but a reciever sight is a whole different thing and with a firesight front sight no matter how bad your eyes are, you can see it good.

Accurate shots out to 200 yards are possiable with this setup and I use it on all my lever guns.  I practice at 200 yards with a 3X5 card painted florecent orange.  Give it a try and you will be surprized how good it works.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

Any side mount meant for the Winchester Model 94 will also fit the Model 92 clones - Weaver & Williams both make excellent/affordable ones, G&H an expensive one.

Thanks for the replies guys. I agree that fiber optic sights are better than regular ones but I just like the precision sighting that scope will give you especially at longer ranges. Also the light gathering ability of a good scope in very low light will still have you on target after the fiber optics have ran out of gas. All that and the fact is that these old eyes prefer a scope.

If you "just gotta" have a scope you'd be better off forgetting the Rossi and buying a Henry or Marlin assuming you can find a Marlin as they discontinued making most models for some period of time and you don't see many new Marlins in gun shops now.

FWIW, every time my FO sights have gone dark for lack of light, when I looked at my watch, legal hunting time had likewise expired.
