found an old cartridge case on blm land
« on: February 29, 2012, 04:53:28 PM »
I tried looking this thing up on the internet but man hard to find the right info. it's just a curiosity. the base measures .480 the rim diameter is .483 the neck has been smashed out of round so can't measure length is 2.125 seems to be some .30 cal. round . Head stamp reads 4-72 at 12 o'clock  L over M at 9 o'clock N over M at 3 o'clock and 7.5 at 6 o'clock. it looks kinda similar to my 7mm-08 but the shoulder is way forward. 7mm-08 is 1.560 from rim to start of shoulder this one is 1.705? any ideas? thanks, mike.

7.62x51 aka 308 or possibly a 303 brit or a 762x54 russian
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

its not the russian, does not have a rim like the 54r . rim nearly matches my 7mm-08 so im inclined to argree on the 308 but the shoulder is way forward and i was hoping someone would understand the headstamp? isn't the 303 brit longer overall? thanks, mike.

the headstamp indicates it was made in April of  1972.
But yes there is plenty of milsurp 303 ammo available yet.
The rim if you measurements are correct pretty well rule out the 308.

If you got some older loading books it should have a drawing and specs for the 303 Brit. in it.

I think I have found the answer! I believe it is a 7.5x54 french MAS dimensions are the closest match i have found. the LM headstamp at the 9 o'clock position i think means Cartoucherie du Mans, LeMans France. Now the big curiosity is how did this round find its way to Indian valley resivoir in California USA? Wierd.
