New barrel latch issues
« on: March 01, 2012, 08:33:09 AM »
Well, I got a new barrel in the mail, and while it seems to fit great -  it doesn't engage the latch at all.  It fits very snug, it just doesn't latch.  This is the first barrel I've gotten that didn't lock right up, so I'm guessing I'm going to have to stone the latch face? ;)

Don't touch the latch, just the shelf on the barrel, I'd recommend reading all the barrel fitting info again carefully, there's a specific order to follow when fitting a barrel.  ;)

Apologies!  I meant to type "latch shelf".  I will marker the bottom of it first to make sure it's seating right.

Be sure you read and understand the FAQ's on fitting....  Most times when I find the barrel closes but will not latch the barrel is long... Meaning the distance form the hinge cut to the breech is long and the barrel altho appears to be tight fitting is actually "proud" of proper fit.

You have herd measure twice cut once...  ;)  Just be sure of whats going on...

Good luck,

I sanded a bit on the hinge cut and it appears to be sitting correctly (on three different frames), but still won't latch (on any of them).  This usually is a much simpler process!

Well, sanded a bit on the hinge slot to get the thing true, and ground a bit on the latch shelf to get it to latch fully and everything looked good.  I proof tested it with some very very very hot .308 loads today and it shot great.  Very happy overall!  Shot some Chilean 7.62 nato rounds and it seemed to get under an MOA at 100yards.
