Man jams cell phones on buses.
« on: March 02, 2012, 06:52:52 AM »
YOUR FRIENDS' ACTIVITY  Vigilante jamming cell phone calls on city buses to help preserve peace and quiet
Those who would dare violate the public peace in Philadelphia, consider yourself on notice: You have a sworn enemy. He's not quite as noble as Superman, and his gadgets aren't up to par with those used by Batman, but to those sick of loud cell phone conversations on city buses, he's a genuine superhero.   His name is Eric — last name withheld by request. His tactics are simple, but terribly effective: He uses a cell phone jammer to interrupt loud conversations on the city's number 44 bus route, resulting in dropped calls.
"A lot of people are extremely loud, no sense of just privacy or anything," said the DIY hacker to an NBC affiliate in Philadelphia. "When it becomes a bother, that's when I screw on the antenna and flip the switch.
"I guess I'm taking the law into my own hands and quite frankly, I'm proud of it."
Though some may agree with Eric's version of Radio Shack justice, jamming cell phone communications is a federal crime. The type of device used could easily interrupt crucial emergency communications, though city transportation officials insist that their buses' communication systems are impervious to this type of jamming.
If caught and prosecuted, Eric could face a $16,000 fine as well as jail time. After learning of the consequences, he has agreed to get rid of the device

I don't know if you can still buy them already made, but they used to be available. If not, I'm sure it won't take much effort to find a schematic on the web.

When I was a teenage electronics tinkerer I made a jammer for televisions. This was back when department stores that sold TVs all got signals from the air. I'd walk near the TV department, turn the jammer on, and all the screens would turn to "snow". This would freak people out. I'd toggle it on and off. It fit in a cigarette pack, which was a normal item for a kid to carry back then.

It was also fun at critical moments in televised football games.

our town has a noise ordinance, where if a cop can hear it from the street, it's too loud.

One mans desire for peace interferes with anothers right to free speech. Which is more important to you?

Most cities have noise ordinances or a reason.

One of my son's buddies has a cell phone jammer in his car.  He got it when he was in Europe.  Love it when we get to a busy intersection and every one in sight has a phone to their ear.  He flips that switch, and suddenly everyone is looking at their phones.  As long as he leaves it on phones within 60ft will not work.

Last spring I was in a local Auto Parts store.  An SUV pulled into the parking lot.  They had one of those earth shaking audio systems.  The attendent at the counter looked at me and said, "Watch this, I'm going to fry them".  He pushed a button on a box he had behind the counter, instant quite.  As I left ten minutes later the man was yelling at his wife, saying "I don't know what happened, it just quite".  He was under the hood checking fuses.  I left chuckling.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

If I'm taking a call from my daughter (or girlfriend, or client, or Dad, whoever) in public and someone decides to jam it, and I know they're doing it, I might be in danger of arrest... because I just might knock him on his ass.

Well, probably not... especially if I'm armed... but he'd deserve it. Golden Rule, people.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

How in the world did we ever survive without instant access to phones?? Quite well. I wonder how many deaths are caused each year by folks yapping or texting while driving?? How many of us have literally had a quiet night out ruined by some slob yapping on their phone while we were trying to eat?? Very rude. How many of us has waited in line to check out while some slob is yapping about changing a baby diaper instead of paying attention and having her money ready to pay?? I could go on and on but you get my drift. I want a zapper.  POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Alaska has passed a no texting while driving law.  :o Makes sense to me, I know i can't text & drive.. Actually I can barely text when I'm not driving.  ::) I have computers & cell phones courtsey of my kids, but when I retire and I no longer need to be available to church members on a 24-7 basis I'll probably get by without one. Maybe one of those old fogie phones with the big numbers that just makes & recieves calls. My Iphone screne is so small I can't use it to surf the web but they charge me for it anyway.  ;)

Distracted drivers (texting and cell jabbering) do cause deaths. So does drinking and driving, it is against the law and people still do it.

PM,
I get your point and it is clearly a good argument but I have to disagree with you.
This guy was on a public bus being his "super hacker commando" self. Imagine for a moment you and your wife are on this bus. She starts having a heart attak. You grab your cell to dial 911 and this guy jams your phone. Still think it's cool to jam cell phones?

Too bad there are too many cell phone users without a brain and do exactly what PM describes.

I love it !! I'd turn the darn thing on as soon as I get into a Restaurant. Now if they make a gizmo that would part-choke some little screaming varmint whose parent hasn't figured out that others may want to eat in some semblance of peace I'd  be in the market of one of those as well.
What is the point of Life if you can't have fun.
