7.62x39 pistol barrel..........
« on: March 02, 2012, 06:34:02 PM »
Has anyone used or heard of a 7.62x39 pistol barrel for either a Tender or Encore and if so how does it perform?

I have a 7.62X39 barrel 24" long for an Encore. They are too much for the Contender so it will be an Encore show. My rifle barrel is very accurate, but note that the T/C barrels are .308 in diameter instead of .310 or .311. I load and shoot Sierra 125gr spitzers in mine. I loaded them in brass cases until I read on GBO about loading the .308s into Wolf steel cases.
It seems to work well, good thing because I have alot of Wolf. I think I saw a 7.62X39 barrel for an Encore pistol on Eds Contenders site in the hot new items section.

I had a 12" Contender barrel that I had custom built by Bullberry.  It was a fantastic shooter, but it was a "handloads only" affair.  It was bored .308 instead of the .310-.311 bore that is standard for the factory ammo.  I actually sold to to one of the members here.

I was thinking of the 7.62x39 for another barrel seeing as to how I have a AK chambered in it .

Does anyone make one with a .310-.311 bore for milspec ammo?

If you get a factory barrel from TC it will be ok for the .310 bore cartridges, but it's not offered for the Contender - Encore only.
Check Ed's TC, I've seen a few pistol barrels on there occaisionally.  TC still shows them listed on the custom caliber lists, but the Custom Shop is not operating right now.  You can get any configuration you want from Match Grade Machine.

Fred at Bullberry says he'll only use Shilen blanks for his barrels, so if Shilen offers blanks in the .310-.311 bore, maybe a 7.62X39 that shoots Wolfe ammo, could be made - were you willing to pay thast much.

I met a guy at the range once and he had a 12ish inch 7.63X39 barrel.  In fact, I shot it.  I thought to myself, "hey, I need to get one of those".  Shortly thereafter I thought...."WHY?".  I already have a 30-30 barrel which is probably better and definitely more versatile.
I'd opt for a 30-30 hands down but if you already shoot the 7.62 round in a rifle or something, then it might be worth considering.

I certainly agree on the 30-30, but I have a rifle in 7.62x39 that shoots milspec ammo, I'd like a Encore barrel that could digest it also.

I have a .300 Whisper contender barrel rechambered to 7.62 X 39.  It doesn't whisper anymore but it shoots great. I also have 2 custom contender barrels in 7.62 X 39, one with a scope and one with iron sights, they both shoot great but I reload for all 3.  They'll shoot factory but extraction is hard especially with steel cases.  The 85 and 90 gr. HP in .308 are great varmint bullets in this caliber.

Last time that I talked to them they were using Wilson and had been for many years.

The factory Encore barrels are 308 bores. I had a 15" barrel and had to handled for it to get accuracy.
