Encore 480 Ruger, need help.
« on: March 03, 2012, 11:04:49 AM »
I got the barrel in a trade... new 12'' blued 480 Ruger.  Is it a good deer caliber? dose any one have this barrel and do you like it?
Did T/C stop making this barrel, I don't see it on there site, I do see the 460.  Any help would be appreciated.

Not too much for deer. Might want to keep the shot 100 yards or less. Use the Hawk 265 Gr bullets and have fun. T/C did stop sell them a few years ago. I think the 454,460, and 500 sales killed the life of the little 480. Shoot it. You will like it.

Thank you jbj,
I ordered one box of Hornady 480 Ruger...325gr. XTP magnum JHP.
and one box of Horn 400 gr. XTP  JHP.
What do you think about my choice, and recoil with the ammo?
All the gun dealers around me don't have 480 ammo.  I had to order it.

I shot the 325 XTP and liked it. I can tell you that the Hornady factory loads are little less performance than what you will get with reloads in the Encore. But if you do not reload then you have a couple boxes of ammo that you will put meat in the freezer.

Oh, I forgot to comment on the recoil. After shooting the 460 and 500 the 480 factory loads sound and feel like a 44 mag. The bigger bore helps when it comes to recoil. My brother hunted one year with the 480 and he did not think it was manly enough so that is why it is in my safe now. Big bullets make big holes I say !! I hunted with the 475 GNR which is the 480 x 2. Um, a touch too much for deer but sure the heck worked !! I have the 475 Linebaugh coming so I guess I will now have all of the 3 Bears of the 475. Have fun !

Hi jbj,
I shot my 480 with Hornady 400 gr. JHP. at 35 yds and got good groups.
I called Dixie Firearms and talked to Rod Huelter, great guy to talk to. I
sent my barrel to him, he will rechamber it for the 475 Linebaugh.  He told
me it will be a hammer with the Encore 12" barrel shooting the Hornady 475
Linebaugh 400 gr. JHP.  I will have it back in two weeks.  I will be able to shoot the
480 and the 475.  Recoil on the 480 to me was a joke, I like recoil it will make me smile
with the 475.  Your 475 Linebaugh barrel that is coming is it a Encore barrel?

Yep, It is to soon be done by MGM. 15" stainless with 6-hole base. I plan on trying the Hawk 265gr & 300gr bullets plus the Hornady 325's. Going to be fun!

yeh makes sense, why shoot .480 when you can shoot .45LC, .454, .460 or .500?  Not bad, just not as popular.  :o   A guy brought a super redhawk .480 to ft dix last weekend.  Previous owner supposedly bought it in 2004, fired two bullets through it, and shelved it until a month ago.  Sold it and the new owner had it out at the range as basically a brand new gun.  ;D

jbj, do you have a picture of your 475 GNR and a picture of the ammo next to 475 Linebaugh ammo?

Since I do not have the 475 Linebaugh barrel yet I have not loaded any of the ammo. Here is a photo of the brass. 480 Ruger left, 475 Linebaugh center,475 GNR right. The 475 GNR is like the 475JDJ which is the 45/70 blown straight wall to let you use the 475 diameter bullet. A muzzle brake is a must I must say. It is the only round that I have shot full power loads with that the trigger gaurd left a scare on my finger even with Reeder's muzzle brake. Yeah did I say that it is way over kill for deer!! Thank you for the picture.....your (475 GNR) brass is awesome looking :o
My 475 Linebaugh will be good for thin skin squirrel and rabbit.... if I place the shot right and not choke.  LOL.

I have an Encore barrel that is chambered for 475 Linebaugh.  It is an 8 inch unbraked barrel and I am using a hard cast 410 grain bullet.  Accuracy is exceptional and recoil is about on a par with any of the big cannons.  It is becoming one of my favorite barrels for the Encore.

Hi reloading_rich,
Did you have the barrel cut down to 8" or did it come that way?  Do you have pictures of it?
It has to look awesome.  Have you tryed Hornady 400gr. JHP?
