I wonder what the 60's would have looked like covered through the lens of 24 hour mass media.  Draft dodgers, free love, illicit drug use in public, riots, ect.
I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."

Let alone the roaring 20s or even the 1870s-1880s.

guzzi. Kids have more today because WE give it to them instead of them earning it. We instill a certain bit of, I DESERVE IT, by not requiring them to work for all the things kids today think they NEED. Name brand clothes the latest styles no matter how stupid they look, blackberrys, cell phones, cars and trucks, computers, iphones and the latest electronic gadgetry. All those are WANTS, certainly not needs. Drive by the local high school and see all of the new cars and trucks, almost all newer and fancier than I can afford to drive. Do they NEED to drive to school?? In most all cases, NO, they should ride the bus like I did. I've lost track of the kids killed driving to and from school when it's not generally necessary. The only ones allowed to drive to school when I was growing up were those with jobs after school or a drs appt. Don't get me wrong, most are good kids but my point is that some parents contribute to the gimmee mentality and in many, if most cases, the kids appreciate nothing. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Not really arguing about anything you have said above and you pointed out most kids are good kids, just saying all generations have had the good, the bad and the ugly but we all know more about what happens, especially bad now a day. A high school I use to work had a fairly wealthy population (less than 15% on free or reduced lunches as compared to 35% plus at other schools in the area) and us staff use to salivate when looking at the student parking lot, Beemers, Mercedes, Hummers, beautifully restored classic cars, etc. I guess those parents plan to continue to support that life style until the kid can. It is hard to go backwards.

That's why I mentioned spoiled rich kids, expecting everything to be given to them.  Also, spoiled poor kids learning to get freebies out of the system., and expecting them.  Two extremes, but growing extremes.  Shrinking group of hard working middle class kids.

On December 14, 1999 my mom and dad sat me down and told me that if I wanted a vehicle I would have to work for it.  Bought myself a truck with my saved money one year later.

Is there really much more brats today or is it that with 24 hours news and the internet we just hear many more of the negative stories?

I have always believed this.  Can you imagine imbedded reporters at woodstock, the detroit riots, and he freedom marches in the south? sending up all the live feed to the satts for the world to see?  I would bet that Americans would have thoguht America was falling apart.  Now, with all this immediate information and internet access, I trully believe kids are getting too much intell at too young of an age.  I believe that this does influence the behavior of an adolescent mind. This is where good parenting skills need to be executed in order to keep the kids on the right path.
It's all a hot mess...........

The kids of the 60's are the lying media reporters we have today.
Singleshotsam, are you an exception or status quo for your age?
In truth the kids I know and see dont give me much hope for the future.

As I have mentioned on other forums on this site, alot of the problems we see today with our present day society can be traced back to LBJ and his " Great Society" program. I was a very young man when this was initialized, and I saw almost immediately corruption began and those that were receiving it became almost immediately like little piglets going to succor on tne old sow( U.S. gov`t)!
And now we have generations that have been raised on this system and now they expect the gov`t to keep taking care of them! So yes, many are spoiled because of this system!

I believe me and my friends and the other like minded people my age are the status quo.  But because were responsible and patriotic there is no news media coverage.  Where's the story in a bunch of young americans fed up with the system we've been handed trying to legitimately make a difference.  But since OWS is so exciting and full of hypocracy it makes for good 24 hour news fodder.

I guess the question I could ask to make my point would be;  "Were the draft dodgers and hippies in the 60's the status quo or exception?"  or was it the boys that sucked it up and fought in Vietnam and went to work and raised a family the status quo?

Also please remember before we continue to bad mouth this generation look at how many are willing to serve in todays volunteer military and serving knowing the have a very good chance of going into harms way. Spoiled brats do not do that.

Be good to have a 3yr mandatory military once out of school (graduate, quit, don't matter)that would also apply to the rich and the welfare.

I could never go for that with the way these politicians use and waste the military these days. They treat our military personnel like they are expendable livestock. Its not our obligation to police the world. If they kept the military here to enforce our southern border and to do things like disaster relief here and abroad then maybe I would agree. Our people shouldn't be dying while fighting other nations' civil wars. If these other countries want freedom then let them fight and win it themselves instead of our people being killed while handing it to them.

We surely need to stay out of Muslim nations affairs.  If they want freedom, they will fight for it.  But sometimes you may get a worse devil in charge, than the one you know.  Same in African nations.  I think we should keep parity military wise with Russia and China, but only use the military to rescue Americans in foreign nations if they are taken hostage or something.  You know, the Canadian border is very porus also.  Only if Canada can watch people coming into Canada like us.  Someone could go into Canada and sneak across the border.  Don't know about their security, but surely it is better than Mexico's.

I've tried to avoid that with my kids.  My 27 year old son and I live alone in my house, but he pays rent.  I explained early on that it's not that I need the money but that every man has to make his way in the world to truly be a man.  This way of thinking did not originate with me.  When I bought my Dad's truck four years ago he gave me a good deal and then told me "I'd GIVE you the truck except for the principle of it".  I completely understood.  THAT is how it is done!

I'm glad you said that guzzi.  Especially since some of the guys on this forum need to be reminded that there are still kids dying to protect their freedom.

Singleshotsam.  I spent my time in the service before you were borne, and if you think I believe everything you are spewing out your very much mistaken, the reason so many young people are in the service is because they cant find jobs in the civilian market, where else could they make the kind of money the milatary pays with NO SKILS?

Then you should be thankful that there are boys out there catching bullets for your right to post your opinions on here freely.  Freedom isn't kept because good men served in the past.  It's kept because there are good men currenlty standing guard to keep you free in your later years.

I would say it's because a lot of them want to follow in their fathers and grandfathers footsteps and serve their country.  I would say that the second reason a lot of people join the military is to get their GI Bill and have their college education paid for.

You pretty out of touch will how society works today mrcooper.  There's no getting a job these days without a HS Diploma.  There's no getting a decent job without getting a degree from a University or Trade School.  And there's no keeping a job without continuing your education and working hard.

Just because you choose to buy into whatever mass media bullcrap you are fed doesn't mean that all of the younger generation is sitting around with their hands out.

And for what it's worth.  I know that there are just as many of my elders that are sitting around on their butts holding out both hands waiting for the government to provide for them.  Where do you think the younger generation learned that trick from?

It bugs the crap out of me when people make it seem that welfare started out with this generation.  As if it hasn't been going on for decades.

Good Grief man!
I do know more then one or two families that are what you consider liberals and do not attend a church whose kids are well behaved and I'm a stickler when it comes to behavior.

Well I'll be the young guy that pisses you old dudes off.  I work a fulltime job for benefits as well as working on peoples computers on the side.  I'm fixing to start a part time automotive detailing business. Most of my friends have more than one job and are exploring extra degrees in addition to their current education.   I'm also considering going back for a second degree in some form of computer technology.    Just waiting on my employer to tell me what they will allow me to go for.  I already have a degree in HVAC/R repair and installation.

I'm doing all this in addition to coaching my son's little league team.  Not to mention finding time to spend with my 2 year old daughter and be a husband to my wife. Not to mention finding any spare time to keep abreast of the political issues that I need to be making myself aware of.  As well as taking any spare time to write my representatives concerning issues that I feel need my attention.  AND working to get completely out of debt.

And you claim that you hate the younger generation because were lazy?  Maybe you should think twice before making a very insulting blanket statement about how a group of young minorities are making you hate an entire generation because were all lazy and have our hands out wanting you to give us more.  Give me a freakin break.  Why don't you guys go out and actually try and talk to some of the younger generation around you instead of making ignorant statements about an entire majority of people who dislike the OWS crowd more than you do.

I don't think i've ever read a more insulting thread than this one.
I agree with you, but generalities are just that. You can be one of the "in general" or be the individual you are.

The question I have for you is how do you do it? I  was born in 71 and am a father of four, all 18 mos or so apart (finally decided to close up shop). My wife and I often feel quite overwhelmed with it all: jobs, activities, quality time etc. Rather than put the kids into day care with strangers, we decided to take the cut in income in order to have at least one parent at home with the little ones. It has been quite a struggle.

Our biggest concern is that while we are out trying to EARN an honest living to provide the basics for our kids, we will neglect spending the time it takes to deflect all the outside influences that in my opinion have brainwashed most of the last three generations in America.

We killed TV & cable completely subscribing only to internet media (it allows us complete control with little or no commercial bombardment). But because our kids still go to public schools they are still rubbing elbows with kids that are part of the "TV drone" population.

You know the old saying "If you roll with pigs, you don't come up smelling like roses".

I think that our concerns go back to the baby boom generation whose WWII vet parents wanted to give them everything they didn't have. I think those parents had good intentions but spent so much time working and making money in order to give their kids "everything" that they neglected to pass on to them many of the old values like humility, hard work, integrity etc.

Many will say that you teach by example which is true to an extent but I have found with children that COMMUNICATION is also very necessary. And it is one of the things that I see breaking down more and more these days.

Texting is no substitute for real interpersonal communication between parent and child.  And parent child, I believe must grow with eachother.

There are many factors that have brought our generations to the state they are in: Mainstream media, I feel is one of the biggest monsters around. I gave it up when I was about 20 (something happened to me that opened my eyes and for the first time, I "SAW" the media for what it really was) I have since then endeavored to stay above its influence

I digress. It sounds like you are an exception to the generalizations and you should be commended. It may sound strange but some people have his notion that more money is the answer to their problems. Forgive me if I am overstepping myself. You seem to have a good handle on things, but I'll say this anyway...PERSONAL (meaning one on one) time with your children is God given and priceless. And amongst the memories of a nice house or fancy toys, or a higher status of living, that one on one time is what they will always remember the most above everything else you may ever do for them. Chose that time over money making time whenever you can afford.
