.223 Bull Barrel???
« on: March 05, 2012, 03:54:19 PM »
I know this has been posted before but, here we go....

I'm torn between which .223 barrel I want fitted to my Handi (Bull or Standard)

I have never owned one in .223 so any advice, Pro's/Con's would be helpful.

Thanks, Blu

If you do alot of walking while hunting i would go with the standard contour,
handi rifles- 22 mag      22 hornet    223      7mm-08      308 chip shot     30-30 x2     30-06 shorty      358 cheez whiz     357 max     35 remington     375-08    410 rifled slug     454 casull     460 s&w     45 smokeless muzzleloader x2     45-70    50 huntsman    50-70 government shikari     20 ga.ush     12 ga.ush    12 ga.3 1/2     10 ga.imp.cyl. slug gun

What are you planning to use it for, or how are you going to be using it?  To stand hunt? Varmit hunt? Stalking? Just target shooting?  If you think it through (weight, length of barrel etc.), you can probably figure it out yourself.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

I have the heavy and it's a tack driver.  The heavy seems less susceptable to heat walking in your POI than std. profiles.  Std. profiles are a lot lighter though for walking.  ;)

Hands down the "bull" is great to have.  If you do a lot of target work its the way to go..........but if hunting is your thing, then the std. is the way to go..........and if your anything like the rest of us you'll GET BOTH!!!!

I like the heavy barrels and try to get them on all my rifles. This may sound odd but I actually kind of like the weight. It is more difficult for me to make an off hand shot but on a rest I am steadier with a heavy barrel. I also dont mind the weight on long walks and heat doesnt affect it as much. Lastly, I like the way they look. I know it has nothing to do with performance but I do not like the look of a contoured barrel, dont know why but the heavy barrel just seems visually appealing to me.

I have a .243 with the 22" bull barrel. I like the balance of the gun with this barrel but I guess maybe due to the metal quality of the barrels the extra weight does not help with heat, just takes longer to cool. I don't know if or how much more heat a .243 produces over a .223 but if I fire three or more shots about a minute apart my hits are walking by the third shot.

I have owned three of the four avalible H&R barrels. The STD, the 22 Bull and the 24 Bull. I have not owned the super light.

I really expected the 24" Barmint bull to be best. It was really good. But a older nickel 22" bull beat it out!  The std to me is not enough of a weight savings. The SL is what you want for a lite sporter IMHO.

My choice was and remains the 22" Bull as comes on the survivor.

I have to go with CW on this one , I have one of the 22" BB rifles that has well over 5000 rounds through it and not so much as a hic-up , the weight savings standard / bull is not that big of a deal breaker .

Ilion accidentally sold me a 24" bull (varmint) barrel several years ago when I had ordered a std contour.  I just kept it and never complained, but now wish I had sent it back.  I find its too heavy to carry comfortably all day (as compared to my 44mag barrel).  And oddly, that extra 2" on the barrel always seems to be catching on something.  Finally, it doesn't balance well (on my plastic-stocked gun).  Balance point is well forward of the hinge pin, and I have to set the forend on the bag.  With handi's, I prefer to put the bag under the hinge-pin.  I've considered adding weight to the butt stock, but that would make it even heavier to carry.  22" bull may not have those issues, I've never tried one.  My other barrels are all 22" pistol calibers.

Thanks for the info, just to help out on the question a little,

I had a 24"BB in .243 H&R.
It was front heavy to me and didn balance well---wasn't the most accurate thing around either.

If I understand NEF, the 22" BB in.223 is not offered in the barrel program, I think the 22" BB would be my choice if it were offered.

The ill balance of the 24" I had spooks me a little, but I do plan on shooting it quite a bit.
Shooting will mostly be Targets & some Varmint hunting.
Thanks, Blu

I have the 22" bull on a survivor stock set, and I have carried it all day on a sling.  For me, (to each his own), I LIKE a heavy gun.  I can hold it steadier.  Of course, my 12 & 1/2 # muzzle loader is a little extreme, but the 223 is great.

Exactly my thought too.  There's still a lot of thick steel in a std contour .223 bbl.  8)

They're cheap.  Get 'em both!!!

For balance, I grind off the head of a 3/4" diameter (I think) close fitting bolt whose shank is as long as the inside of the hole in the stock.  I insert this in the stock chasing a rubber washer to protect the threaded bolt there.  Balance "problem" solved.

Sure, the rifle is heavier still by the weight of the bolt, but who cares?  I am a bench shooter and a sniper.  The combined weight keeps felt recoil ridiculously low.
