NAA .22 Magnum
« on: March 06, 2012, 01:54:54 PM »
I went to the local gun store today to buy one, the little 5-shot single action, $229.  Filled out the paperwork.  Then the dealer tells me that because of the rampant fear that Obama will get re-elected, people having been buying guns like crazy, just like they did when he got elected the first time .  The 15 minute wait for the background check now takes 3 days!  3 days!  It's like living somewhere else.  I just feel a person ought to be able to walk in and buy a gun and leave with it.

When I was 13 here in California, I went to our local hardware store and bought 22 single shot with ammo and walked out with it that day. Now at 63 I have to wait 14 days to the minute to pick up a gun I bought.  What country or what world are we in?

Are these long waits a state thing?  There is no waiting period for me, might be because of having a cpl, not sure, but other people I notice in Michigan do not wait without a cpl, they go get a permit to purchase a handgun, buy it on the spot and turn in the paper work later.  14 days is ridiculous.  What could this possibly accomplish, especially if people already own guns?

Well, the 14 day wait is your state, county or city, not Big Brother.   The world we live in now is a very dangerous one, and that is the root why some localities (like yours) delay possession.  Makes living in a cash and carry state, and especially a very pro gun county and city like I do among the best of the best for shooters.

BTW, we're the same age, and I can still well remember when first stationed in the military in The Republik of CA San Dog in the 60's, where it could be hard to even buy recreational 22 rimfire ammo (even in uniform) because I was 18 (under their required 21).   But it was OK that I could serve my country with all the dangers it posed, and even shoot/kill people despite my age (Vietnam).    Still remember a snot nosed clerk in a San Dog sporting goods store I went over the counter for in uniform when he wouldn't sell me ammo, and the manager there that sold me all the ammo I wanted after chastising what was left of the clerk.    Those were the days before your name, ID# and purchase was recorded in CA though, and most civilian business owners in San Dog, San Francisco, etc supported servicemen no matter what kind of business.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I bought a revolver last week and the dealer did the background online (Colorado) and was done before I'd finished filling out the 4473. When I had an FFL (last year) I did all background checks by phone and sometimes that took nearly an hour. I've no idea how long the FBI takes since I've only dealt with CBI here in Colorado.

Some background checks take longer particularly with a common name due to the sheer number of people that have to be checked.  I remember a check I made while working part-time for my FFL a few years ago, the man’s name was Victor Perez, there were over 2000 people with that name in the state of Texas alone.  It took a full three days to get the results back.  By the same token I have got approval over the phone in less than 3 minutes on some people.

There has been somewhat of a delay here in Texas for the past month or so due to the number of gun sales.  For most dealers sales are up 30-40 percent.  I don’t know if it’s fear of Obama being re-elected or just that people have the money to spend, either way sales have been good.
