Ramrod ??
« on: March 06, 2012, 02:24:39 PM »
Ok I got what appears to be an original ramrod on my dbl Pedersoli 12ga. It's a 1976 model both the tulip end and the other end are pinned I believe to what I am pretty sure is a fiberglass rod. When I am home or at the range i have no trouble cleaning or pulling patches ,cards balls or just cleaning with my other range stuff . But what my problem is going to be is hunting I really don't want to modify this rod I have right now if it is original .I think I can get by with just the tulip and the worm on the other end . What I have been thinking of doing is just buying the covered worm and and the tulip end along with the Hickory rod and making a complete new rod for hunting. I looked at TOW and seems I could build one pretty cheap. What have you guys done? Thanks Kurt

The original for my Pedersoli double was broken so I made one out of an aluminum arrow shaft using the original tulip and put a dowel in the other end which I attached a threaded ramrod end to attach the worm if needed.  I have a few hickory ramrods that I can use to make me a wooden one, but have gotten used to my makeshift rod and it does look like a solid brass one that I don't bother.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

If the rod is fiberglass it is not original to the gun, they came with a tapered wooden rod, so I would not worry about modifying it to suit your needs. The rod has to be fairly small diameter to fit the mortise in the stock and that makes a wooden rod kinda fragile.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

Thanks guys . I think I found the solution. Looking in the garage for an old aluminum arrow I found the unused section of rod from my chimney brush. Just happens to be exactlly the same color and size as the fiberglass rod already on the gun. So I ordered a jagged tulip and a covered worm from TOTW should be able to put together a nice hunting rod for under $15. Thanks Kurt
