Actually, there is more than three. The original with the hammer safety, the cartridge selector on the hammer makes another one, the easy open frame makes another one, the engraving change makes another one, the armour Alloy makes another one. The barrels also evolved with roll marking, sights, locking lugs, etc

Probably the most liked functional changes are the selector on the hammer, the easy open frame and maybe the split locking lugs on the barrel.  Don't know the sequence they came in but I believe the easy open frame was around 1995 or 96.

The 1st version of the Contender started with serial number 1001 to serial number 500,000. This version has the acid etched sides till towards the end then they had machine etched puma head on them. They are both available in blue and stainless steel. There was also a version which looks like stainless steel called Armor Alloy. These had a smaller barrel pin and serial number started with an "A". They could be sent back to the factory to make the hole in the barrels and frames larger to let you use the blue/stainless barrels on all. Then T/C changed the frame style called the G2 which has the "step" at the top of the frame just like the Encore. Many like the original version more for the trigger. Some like the G2 since you do not have to open the action to be able to recock the hammer.
This is an overview of the differences but many changes within the original version was made. Mostly hammer changes and pivot pin location to make it easier to open. This easy open happened around serial number 195,000
