.357 mag Handi loads

Hi Guys,
 
I'm loading my .357 Handi up for deer and was looking for a decent load for it. The one I currently am working with is a 158gr Speer SP over 2400. I haven't Chronied it yet but it should give me around 1800fps. Is this a good combo for deer or should I try something like an XTP? I have some of those but hear that they top out at around 1500fps.

Should do fine. Jerry Lester used to be our resident .357 Magnum deer hunting expert. He used it extensively in both rifles and handguns for his deer hunting. His load was the Remington 158 JSP over a max charge of Lil' Gun.

Jerry lost his job and his internet connection and hasn't posted here in a long time. He is missed. I hope he is doing well these days.

tops out for structural stability meaning they're ready to blow apart upon contact with ANYTHING above that speed maybe... they go faster safely though.  Shooting max loads of H-110 w/ 125 XTP out of a 4'' revolver I was getting rediculous splash effects versus the same loads with berry's plated of the same weight.  I never did find anything more than fragments off the xtp's because they literally blew up on 2-liters filled with soapy water... the others just busted them open real good and got deformed. 

might be what you need, but then again shooting out of 16' plus of barrel I don't know that a round-nose wouldn't blow apart too.  I do know that using 158gr XTP's with H-110 got me MUCH better accuracy and less recoil and blast.  I assume that the heavier bullets in the short barrel slowed down the load enough that it didn't top that 1500ish limit and kept the jackets intact.... once again I don't know if that would be enough to help on a rifle though. 

the only thing I know for sure is that hornady xtp's WILL open up and violently dump energy into a target, judging by MY EXPERIENCE ONLY it's gonna dump it on the skin if hot-rodded, not in the innards.

The Speer 158gr JSP is a good bullet to use for deer sized game @ those velocities. The 158gr XTP-HPs are not. I do tho, prefer the 158gr XTP-FPs over the Speers in my lever carbines. Big difference in penetration between the two XTPs, but accuracy is very similar when loaded the same.  Since the FPs can be a little hard to find sometimes,  I save them for hunting and practice with the HPs. The 158 Remmie JSPs work well also.

According to Hornady, the XTP-HP is useful between 800 and 1400 FPS, while the XTP-FP is good from 1200-1800 FPS.

been working with 158gr. jsp sierra's
and 2400
worked great so far.
good solid boiler room hit in the left
side "armpit", totaled heart/lungs.
good quick humane shot.
roughly 90 yrds.
speer shouldn't be much different
