Yesterday at an auction I spotted what I thought was a 30-40 Krag. It appeared to be in fairly good shape so I picked it up for a closer look. I was shocked to find it marked as a 6.5x55. I went back to my truck grabed a couple of my reference books and started looking. I couldn't find any thing in any of my books to indicate that Krag ever made a 6.5x55. I looked on the web this morning and found they did in-fact make a 6.5x55, but couldn't find anything to give me a value.

Does anyone know what a 6.5x55 Krag would be worth. This one did not have the standard 30-40 style stock, it was a pistol grip and appeared to have been sportirized, judging from the wood. It was manufactured in 1919.

I passed on the bid because I wasn't sure what it was worth, it sold for $275. Did I screw up by not bidding?

This was probably an original Norwegian model.

While I've seen the 30-40 Krag's averaging $500 to $750 here when I do see them, I do look at the caliber/prices and I would think the Krag in 6.5 X 55 even seeing would be rare and maybe worth more? While I never really looked at history Krag's before Jack's posting of the website surely gave me some Krag education. While I rarely spend over $300 for a surplup if that I kind of pass on the higher priced ones. There has been a run on military sporters lately with some great cheap prices too. I have my eye on a 303 britt for $75 which I may pickup. I hate to let it pass by so cheap and the sporter job was really done nice, it actually looked good. I did see a Krag sporter here too but I can't remember the price nor the caliber it was. There is so much to learn and know about these guns and just when we think we know something new pops up and even I don't have a clue sometimes too. But I try to post and ask here about it then go back and buy it quickly which I have done here too. It just goes to show us there are some great finds still out there!!! BigBill

I talked to a dealer/collector from Houston today, he said I should just bend over and let him kick it. He said it would be awful hard to give an exact value, but since it was a rather rare caliber for the Krag it had to be worth much more than the selling price. He seemed to think the gun was an original and that it would sell in the $900. - $1,000. range.

When ya don't know nothin' bout em, it's hard to judge their worth.

Well you could of bought it, hunted down an orginal stock for it, then keep it or auctioned it off , I'm sure you would of made money for sure on it. My problem is they turn out so nice after cleaning them up I keep them.
