300BLK to the Max!!
« on: March 09, 2012, 12:23:08 AM »
A 300BLK rimmed type cartridge (30-357) next to a Maxi version.

The range report on the Maxi version shows 110 grainers @~3000fps and 150's @~2500fps.
If you want to stay rimless, .223 brass necked to .30 would be about a tenth of an inch longer.
...or, with a Handi. cut the .223 brass by .1" and shoot either.

Come on 300BLK!!

Another option is to use 222 Brass and have not so much to trim
Still another option if you could find some of the European or Australian Rimmed 222 brass neck them up and be done :o

If you are really getting 2500 fps with 30 cal. bullet in a necked 357 max. case the pressure would have to be somewhere north of safe.
Compare the case capacity of that to a 30-30 AI and it just doesnt seem possible.

I don't have one yet, and I didn't test it;
....but I did look at 30TCU data before I passed it on.

I think if you look for 30TCU load data on the net it will be a little more believable.
30TCU and the Maxi necked to .30 will be close enough to use the same starting loads and expect comparable velocities. This kind of cartridge, like the 7.62x39 can teach us something about efficiency.

Also 222 rimmed is the same as 357 maximum necked to 222.

Google " .223 necked up to 30 cal" and you get 8960 results.
On the first page I got:
7.62x45
30TCU
30/223
7.62x40WT
...and they don't all have the same taper or shoulder angle.

If a rim is cut on a .222 chamber, .222 rimmed would seem like a good name.
...but if the same length chamber is 5.56 TCU cut short and rimmed, .222 rimmed would be a poor name choice IMHO.

My point:
Wildcats are not all the same.
"30 Apache is a .223 necked up to 30 cal"
" I make 222 rimmed  from 357 maximum brass"
...are true statements.
".223 necked up to 30 cal is called 30 Apache"
"...... 222 rimmed is the same as 357 maximum necked to 222."
Leave a lot out.
