Refinishing barrel in nickel?
« on: March 09, 2012, 08:55:14 PM »
Could I have a H&R single-shot shotgun barrel refinished in nickel without any lockup/fit issues?

I have read the FAQ information about the problems of painting, but I would think nickel would be a much thinner finish.  I know H&R has factory nickel barrels on some models like the Tamer.  I was wanting the blued barrel on my Topper to match the nickel receiver.

I would think it would work.  Nickel plating ranges from .000003937"-.010" thickness.  They could possibly keep it thin in those areas.

Yeah, that's what I would think too.  The particular place I was thinking about getting it refinished claims .0004" thickness, which sounds small.  However all the H&R/NEF guns I have lock up like a bank-vault, so I don't know if that's just enough thickness to cause problems.  If it's possible to plate at different thicknesses that would be great.  I have contacted the refinishing shop about my concerns, so hopefully they'll be able to give me a definitive answer.

Don't know if there's a feeler gauge in that size, but you could try the smallest ignition feeler and see if that stops lock-up.  If it doesn't then you'll know at what point you have to stop at least.  ;)

Looks like they are available down to .0005".  I might have to try that.

Good.  It's been a few years since I messed with ignition feelers, couldn't remember how small they got.  ;)

Will do.

I'm going to be getting my barrel chopped and probably threaded for choke tubes before I send it to get refinished, so it might be a little while before I can give you a first hand recommendation.
