357 Herrett from 375 Winchester brass
« on: March 11, 2012, 05:10:26 PM »
Anyone tried forming 357 Herrett from 375 Win brass?  If so what are the pros and cons and does it basically eliminate fire forming.

I know the brass cost is a lot more but if it shoots good as formed this would almost off set the initial cost.  Also the 375 brass is loaded at higher pressures than the 30-30 which could mean longer case life.

All input appreciated.

1.  Three seventy-five Winchester brass is stronger than 30/30 Winchester brass and is probably the best choice for making 357 Herrett brass.  If loads were worked up with 30/30 brass, a load adjustment for 375 brass will probably be needed.

2.  You don't really have to fire form even 30/30 brass.  You run it into your 357 Herrett full length sizing die, then into a trim die and cut off most of the excess with a hacksaw and then file to length and shoot.

If you use .375 Winchester brass, do you have to neck turn it?

375 winchester brass is overkill for the 357 Herrett. The formed cases from 30-30's will handle any published load out there.

375 is all I have used for some time now.  The pros are stronger heavier brass which allows for more reloads per piece of brass.  It is easier to form than 30-30 and you will not have to worry about splitting necks in the process.

Cons are the fact that 375 is thicker heavier brass and normal load data has to be reduced to stay within pressure limits due to reduced case capacity.  For me at least it is a worthy trade off.

No need to neck turn or fireform if properly sized to fit your gun but as a herrett shooter you know how to properly size already.

Thanks to all for your replies.  Been loading the 30 Herrett for about 30 years and had read that the 375 Win brass was a good choice for the 357 Herrett which is my newest quest.

Now got find some 375 Win brass I can afford :)

Thanks,  Ken
