What scope rail for VP 22 barrel?
« on: March 11, 2012, 07:41:58 PM »
Hi Guys,
Was just curios which scope rail I should order for my VP 22 barrel. From what I can tell the normal scope rails are to long for the VP's rear sight set up. Thanks ahead of time!

Kevin
I modified a rail to fit my VP barrel so that I didn't have to remove the rear sight. I filed off the bit at the back until it didn't touch the receiver. It was an aluminum one I had in my spares gallery and if I remember correctly it had only two holes that matched the spacing of the D&T holes in the barrel. I figured two only two screws in the rail was not going to be an issue with 22LR recoil.

It really depends on the rear sight set up you have on your VP barrel.  I have the Leupold Rifleman scope mount on one of the VP barrels.  It fits and works great for both types of rear sights.  A word of caution though, if you have a ladder type rear sight like tallyho has, you might have to push the ladder forward on the rear sight (theoretically setting the iron sights to shoot lower), but what the heck, your not using them anyway, your going to be using a scope.

It also allows you to mount an inexpensive Tasco red dot on it, without making any modifications to the rail.  All the other scope mounts for the H&R that I've used require you to make a modification (file an extra slot in the rail) in order to mount the inexpensive Tasco red dots, which you can pick up in Wally world from $33 (1X-30mm Red Dot) to $42 (1X-40mm Red & Green Dot).
