NAA .22 Magnum
« on: March 12, 2012, 01:12:39 PM »
Anybody carry one of these?  I bought one this week.  1 5/8" barrel.  I shot it 5 times into a bag of feed from about 10 feet.  All the rounds went into a group the size of an apple in the center of the bag.  Not bad for just pointing; there's no way to aim it using the sight.
I think I'll carry it as a "reload" to my J frame, as it seems to weigh less than a loaded speed strip or speed loader.  Maybe not, but very easy to carry.
Recoil is substantial and painful if the shooter doesn't keep his thumb off the cylinder when firing.  I don't think the hollowpoints expand at all, from what I've seen on the Net, but still, penetration is sufficient.
As an afterthought, I gotta remember to get those slugs out of the feed before feeding.  I'm not sure lead slugs would be good for my little pet goats.

I carried a Freedom Arms 22 Mag. mini revolver for years as a hide out gun when I was a uniformed cop.  Either in my uniform shirt pocket, or on a leather lanyard around my neck.  They can be surprisingly accurate if you follow the fundamentals.  And yea, those little magnums are a handful, especially muzzle blast, for their size.

If you just want an attacker to just turn you loose for a little bit use that little 22 mag with solid slugs. But if you want to end the confrontation use that J frame. The best ammo to load that little 22 mag with is rat shot and shoot for the face and eyes. When your attacker is blind you can beat the snot out of them.  ;D

bird shot ? so the bad guy gets his hand up and blocks the bird shot . With a bullet at contact distance it goes thru the hand and does enough damage to make him stop .
When we shoot someone it is to stop an attack that you feel will lead to harm or death to you. Your concern is stopping the attack. The attack is not stopped until the bad guy can't harm you. A load of #12 shot in a cheek may not do the deed. The attacker may be on pcp .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

That little 22 mag will ricochet around the body cavity like a pin ball marble and do extensive damage along the way. One shot to the solar plexus will take them down in a heap.

Several years ago I picked up a NAA .22 Mag from a guy I worked with for $75.00, the gun was like new in the box.  I fired it a few times then cleaned it and stuck it in the dafe where it has remained for several years.  After reading this post last week I decided to get her out and fire it again.  It went to the farm with me earlier this week and after about 8-10 rounds I remembered why it had earned a place in the safe.  The gun is uncomfortable to shoot and I can’t hit the broad side of the barn with it,  I brought it home gave her a good cleaning and put it back in it’s place……the back of the safe.

I know some people love the little gun, but for me, I’ll stick with the J frame or PF-9.

Had one of the "Casull's Improvement" models..
Uncomfortable to shoot, inaccurate, burned my hand upon firing.
I literally dis-assembled it and threw it away!
Did not want to give it away because I was afraid someone would
get hurt with it. They are a novelty Item in my opinion.
I would prefer to carry a good knife as a backup over
one of these tiny revolvers.
One another note though, they are relatively well made.

tinman, you are right.  I found myself away from home several times this week with nothing but the .22M.  I've never done that before.  A habit I gotta break before it sets in.

The NAA in .22 is something that's been on my list for a while, I will get one someday I think they are pretty neat.  I probably won't ever use it as my primary carry, but it would sure be easy to slip into a pocket for something extra, like Mike says, a reload to something else would be nice. The reason these little revovers catch my eye is because they are pretty too....I want one with stag grips, so when I get one I will probably pay more for that.  Just can't decide on .22 mag or .22 lr....wondering if the .22 mag really makes that much difference in a barrel so short?

Might be fun to play with but I wouldn't choose one for even a back-up. There are much better choices with the very small, and light, .32's, .380's and even 9mm's. Yes, .22's can richochette around inside the body......sometimes. Often they don't. Better than a rock? That depends on the size of the rock! ;)

Many places I can't openly carry.  With the NAA no one knows.  I dropped a 90# dog with it with one shot to the top of the head.  Unless a man is armor plated, a cranial shot should stop him.  This is a last resort weapon, but it beats no weapon at all.

Check the ballistics my friend!!  ::) The 22M is a stout preformer!  It's single downfall as a personal defence caliber is its a rimfire. BUT being its in a revolver and another round is but a thumbs pull away. Its an acceptable backup or even third or deep cover piece.

These little guns are by far the easiest to hide and carry, not the most powerful by far, but you can always have it with you, it is the better than nothing solution for sure.  They would not be for someone who is likely to have to use it, but for the person that needs it that one in a million times.  The short, believe it or not, is quite a bit smaller and easier to carry than the LR is, and as has been said, they are extremely well made.  Larry

Maybe so, but my P32 .32 Auto is not much bigger and is easily hid in any pocket and my PF-9 9mm is super easy to conceal too. In a pinch, when a split second counts you can't count on head shots.

I know of a situation where a fellow walked up to another, pulled a 32 auto, and emptied 7 rounds in him, point blank.  The shot fellow just stood there stunned.  He had on a heavy jacket, and while injured, his wounds were not that serious.

I've had a cop tell me anything under a 40 was unacceptable.

Truth be told, I hope I never have to find out, but if I do, I'm still hoping for that head shot.  A heavily muscled man can absorb a lot of lead before he goes down.

Where a .32 is concerned a whole lot depends on the type of ammo you use. I prefer ball ammo as oposed to hollow points in my P-32 and +P loads. Much much better penetration.

Mechanic, even a blind sow can find an acorn once in a while.

Any weapon is potential fatal, I know of an incident where someone was killed with a piece of wood wall trim rammed into his eye.

That doesn’t mean I would rely on a piece of wood (or .22/.22 Mag) if my chops were on the line and I had another choice.  Like a wife, a carry gun is an object of choice; I like my women sexy and pretty………. and guns with at least a 30 cal bore.

I carry an NAA 22 Mag everywhere..it's in my pocket of my lounge shorts as I type.  Where's my .45?  Well....as I sit here it's 20 feet away. Close, but not at hand...I didn't think I'd have to use it as I typed..so I wasn't prepared. Honey-badgers will kick in your door while you type..they don't care.
Now, mine is the 1 5/8" barrel and there are grips for it to make it very controllable, they're larger rubber grips similiar to Pachmayr's, but I carry mine with the standard birdsheads.  I also carry it with Hornady ballistic tips.  Those expand.
"Hollow points" do not expand, but will penetrate further than my .45 .  I set up 4  one gallon water jugs when I first got it and one sailed through all 4.  Finally caught one in the 5th, just like it left the gun only with rifling marks, zero expansion. Center mass and I don't think it's going to "bounce around" but will probably go right on through creating a lot of messy parts as it does.  A .22 lr may bounce around...or it may go in a straight line.  A kid I know was shot in the back accidently and the bullet went straight through passing through his lung and came to rest under the skin of his right nipple.  He lived but he went down instantly and he was a big boy.
At 21 feet off the bags mine shot about a 4" group only a foot low and 4" to the left using the sights.  Point and shoot at 10 feet rapid fire all went into a 6" circle right around my target dot. I'm guessing in a moment of need it would be fired instinctively without using the sights and it would probably be about that distance or less.  One word of advice...don't carry it in your pocket for extended periods with the same ammo.  I hadn't fired mine in about 6 months and I had two rounds that needed a double strike.  I reloaded with fresh ammo and no problems and I shot another 25 rounds.  Common sense, but I didn't think about it before ...now I do.

With this NAA talk, I took mine to the range last week... its been LONG TIME since last shooting any of them...

One was misfiring badly!  I mean maybe one shot out of the cylinder... I tried a couple times... Then I thought maybe the lint had built up inside... EVERY one of these thats carried in ones pocket developes one to three lint balls under the grips... Well, I found the lint balls... but nothing interfering with the workings... I cleaned it completely and pulled come bullets, loaded the cylinder and tried to "pop" them... Got two to go off first go around and two more second.....

I think I need a new main spring....  These things stay loaded... I had just changed the bullets to the Hornady Critical Defense jobbers. But this did not matter as I tried 4-5 different brands and all mis fired...

Anyone else have this issue? Anyone ever deal with NAA?  Gotta look up the contact info... HOPEFULLY they will just send me some thru the mail....

Good points all.  I don't suppose the little gun is for everyone.  The fact is, I've come to rely on mine too much.  I thought I'd work that out, but as yet I have not.  I keep big (bigger that a .22) handguns within reach at all times, except sometimes I get out of the vehicle in summer clothes and leave the real gun in the truck and tote the NAA into the gas station or other daytime away from home location.  That ain't good, I know.  But it's better that leaving the big gun in the truck and having nothing at all.  From my personal backyard tests of the NAA Magnum, I'm certain it will stop an attack in most all cases.  Unless someone is very intent on hurting me, he will back away from being shot.  The very viable argument to that is that if an attack comes that requires a defender to shoot, he will most assuredly be faced with a very serious situation and a better armed assailant.  The role of such a small gun should be that of a backup, or a reload.  I know that.  Still, it's a comfort to have your hand on the grip of the little thing in your pocket.  It's a gun that can be with you always, not matter the circumstances or the weather.  I like my NAA.  I don't want to defend my home against terrorists with it, I don't want to depend on it in obviously dangerous places, but for day to day at home or in my country setting, I like it and take comfort that it's there.
