Weight 10 lbs.....hunting rifle?
Yup why not 10 lbs+, my uncles m70 he bought in 1947 and then glass bedded, and fitted with a pachmyr cheek piece weighs closer to 13 lbs.
Now what was your answer to the OP's question?
[/quote       10 lbs?  Must be one of those drive to a Bull let me set up on the hood and here is your $10,000. Not humppig that up to 12,00 ft.  Not me Oh, cost of the rifle?  $ 6,000.00, every man hunting rifle?  I would go with the .243 for the OP's question.
Fella would be hard pressed to find elk during rifle season at 12000 , that's well above timberline in most places, not much to attract elk that high.
Glad you picked the 243.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

Nope only been in the place once and that was to visit relatives in Abq. My elk hunting has been done over the last 50 someodd years in Wyoming and northern Colorado.

Well, when the snow has not driven them lower, you will find that they love to escape over the high ridges to the other side of the mountain.  You will be humpping it to get a good shot before they cross.

They do the same thing here, but it's seldom there's anything but rock above 11000, and most of their preferred feed and cover is below 10000.

They love to bed down on the windward side of the mountain as high in the tree line as they can get, then at the slightest sniff of you or movement by you.....bye bye.

I had both calibers and the 243 axis is one light recoiling and accuarate gun. it shoots everything I put down the pipe from factory to my hand loads. The 7-08 had a good kick to it so had a 270 and let it go. was in my opinion closer to the 270 than the 243 in recoil
