Thats odd...
« on: March 13, 2012, 04:03:47 PM »
My 111 .270 has an odd litle quirk. Her 200 yard groups ar larger than those at 300 with the same load. Went out today and shot some 3 1/4 inchers at 200 and some 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 inchers at 300. Now mind you I'm NOT complaining! Its just alittle odd...

Concentrating more for the further distances maybe?  I've seen it happen.  I did the same thing qualifying in the military...300 yard targets were a breeze, but the 250 always gave me problems for some reason.  Now it just depends on how solid a rest I can get or how solid my field positions are.  My kneeling is improving greatly, but I still prefer prone with a bipod.

maybe it took that distance to stablize ? It couldbe a product of rifling / bullet weight  etc.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Thinking about it further, 200 has been an issue with 3 other rifles... Right now she wears and OLD 4x so some better glass would be nice. I enjoy shooting at these longer distances. Tight groups at 300 are even more satisfying than at 100.

It is as possible that as Shootall said it`s just stablizing the bullet untill it`s past 200 yrds. If your shooting a heavy for caliber bullet odds of that are far better. I know what you mean about shooting supper tight groups with a 4X scope. It does put you under a little handycap. It does not put you under that handycap when hunting deer though.

Likely the scope paralax settng is more correct at 300 yards than at 200 yards.  Larry
