Dangit, I got a dilemma
« on: March 14, 2012, 03:42:15 PM »
Not exactly sure what to do here. I have had this really neat project in mind for the past few months and have been trawling (not trolling)  the forums and classifieds for a cheapo H&R 45-70 to chop on.  Basically I want to chop the barrel down, switch to synthetic stocks, and add Firesights for a truly down and dirty truck and pig gun that I don't mind getting dinged and scratched.

Well, I've been looking and looking and finally found one. Got the seller down to $175,which I figure will still keep my project under 300 after gunsmith fees for chopping, recrowning, and remounting the front sight base.  From the one crappy pic the seller had I thought It was a regular Handi.   Well, I go to pick it up today, and the damn thing looks like this:

Never seen a stock like this, 'specially one that's not a Monte Carlo style.   Not a ding or a scratch on it, and well, I think it's kinda purdy.  So here's my dilemma, I overshot my goal.   I'm not sure I want to chop on this one, but seeing as how it'll never take the place of my beloved 1895GS, it ain't much good to me as is.

I suppose I could possibly make half my money back selling the stock and proceed with the project, but what do yall think?   Is this a unique one that I should leave as is, or should I charge forward with the swine slaughterer?  This would be a lot easier if it were the plain one I thought I was getting.

Sell the stock or if you like it put it on one of your other rifles and sell that stock. CAB

It's already ugly so it'd make a good truck gun ;D   Little more weight than a syn so better for that cal. and the straight stocks are fast and Handi. Cut the barrel and you might like it better if you don't mind scratching that pretty wood up ;)

Oh, if you're talkin them H&R plastic colored sites, they'll prolly break the first time you pull it out of the truck :(   Maybe a nice peep :)

I have a 500 S&W handi that has those sights. They appear to be what the manufacturer calls remington shotgun sights. Nice quick sight picture They are a polymer construction but seem tough.  Have not used them enough to know how they will stand up to the woods. CAB

What kind of phone is that?

The ones that came on my 500 are gone. But someone treated them pretty rough when I wasn't looking >:(  So they may hold up under regular use :-\  I didn't get the chance ::)

Not DILEMA, OPPORTUNITY;) Continue with your down and dirty 45-70 and acquire an SB2 and 26" 20 ga MOD barrel (open it up to IC); you can get them for under $100. Replace whatever it is furnished in with that stock you will have a very nice Grouse and Woodcock gun. Or, if no interest in a Grouse gun, that stock would look terrific on an iron sights 30-30. OPPORTUNITY!

Monteria, yessir.  You must be a green screaner yerself.   2cool-er too?

I think if I chop her down, I'll end up in the 5.75lb range, and all I'll shoot through it is mild handloads with a hardcast at whatever velocity gets the sights to zero @50yds.

Please whatever you do, don't mess with the furniture.  I think they're really great.  If it's really bothering you, I have the solution.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

I would sure keep that stock as is.  Find a Pallet set on the classified or (best way to spend $) buy another donor gun for the project.
just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they are not watching you

Barrel doesn't look 22"... Already 18?  Pretty short for a 45-70.  Pallet wood might be lighter.  Plastic definitely.  Trade or sell stock and get another for less $$.  JMHO...

Dang boys - I'm surprised no one has posted an "I'll take it" yet to be first in line on that purty piece of furniture.... ;D ;D
you always see certain items going in minutes or sometimes seconds,  but this kinda would make it a minus figure in terms of the classifieds... ;)

Thanks for the offer!  Soooo...do I just get after it with the hacksaw and dremel, then recrown?  No lathe, no skills, but I've got plenty of "what could possibly go wrong?" ;D

I've got a stock set like that on one of my Maxies.  Came off a shotgun, I like the looks of em.  If ya don't like the straight stock, sell it and put the $ on your project.  DP

Close... I do it carefully, but the premis is the same. No lathe needed, it is a hand cutter. I have done 5bbls with it, and though it might not be as pretty as a lathe job (not as smooth), they all shoot great.
