Lyman DeerStalker mystery
« on: March 15, 2012, 10:48:27 AM »
Greetings fellow smokepole shooters;

I have two deerstalkers, one is the original model and the other is the later carbine. Both have had the ramrod spool/thimble/tube loosen up to the point of falling out.  The sling mount won't come off. No hole. I drilled my own hole and tightened them up, using Locktite. OK  How did they assemble these in the first place? How is a non-machinist supposed to tighten this?

Other than this mystery they are fine rifles and shoot excellent.

  God Bless our community,    P.A.

 Well believe it or not, it just screws into the thimble.

 You can un-screw the sling mount then reach in through that hole with an allen head and tighten the thimble down,, then re-install the sling mount stud.

That makes sense. I tried 'reasonble' torque to remove it. I should have used a bit more. Lyman doesn't use allen heads, all slotted.

     Mystery solved! Thanks

New mystery, the previously mentioned sling mount thimbles have been loosening. I now have the screws glued in and I shortened the under rib a little bit. I will see if that works.
