Ordered my .257 Weatherby!
« on: March 15, 2012, 10:48:32 AM »
I have been wanting one for a real long time. It should be here in 3-5 days. I have already bought a box of 80 ttsx, 87 grain SP, 115 grain BTS, 110 grain accubonds and 5 boxes of the 100 grain spitzer's. I will be getting a S2 Vanguard. What all has everyone else used with there .257 Weatherby Mag.?
If anyone has any pictures of critters that they have taken with there .257 and could tell me what loads they used I would be very thankful.

Buddy of mine bought a Weatherby Mark V in .257 Weatherby earlier this week.  He was shooting the Hornady 100's when I was over there Wednesday.  Beautiful gun with the laser engraving of oak leaves and great bluing.  Very deep.  WAY outta my price range though.  hehe  Have fun with yours.

Does Weatherby use the same twist rate for Vanguards and Mark Vs.  If so the rate might favor the 100 grain over anything much heavier.  I confess that I do not know the answer.

Both currently are 1-10.  Barrels have a mind of their own & some will favor different types of bullets & weights, but
1-10 is good for 100gr. & 120 gr. alike.

ive killed quite a few deer with the 257. mostly with 100 grain seirras and nos bt but some with 100 corelocks, nos part, hot cores, and barnes tsx. Ive also used 115-120 sierras, BTs, parts, hot cores and hornady interlocks. Differnce in killin power and meat damage between all of them is slight and bullet placement has alot more to do with it then bullet selection. If i had to pick one bullet to use on deer it would probably be the 100 bt. If the rifle possibly would be used on something larger id probably go with the 115 or 120 partition, whichever shot better. this year im going to do some load developement wth sciracco bullets just to try something differnt. Ive got a bunch loaded for the new 7 mag, 7stw and my new 257. Only bullet id really say ever failed me was the tsx barnes. It just doenst open up well enough or fast enough to anchor deer. Might be a great elk bullet in the 257 but i wouldnt use it again on deer.

I don't have the .257 but I've had a 25-06 for about 30 years.  Probably have taken 6-8 with 100 grain bullets and 30-40 with 120.  My rifle shoots a slightly better group with the 100's but the 120 gave DRT performance and the 100s usually did not.  The 100s I shot were factory CoreLokts and the 120s were CoreLokt and handloads with Sierra and Hornaday.
All my deer rifles shoot BT's more accurately than any other bullet, but I stopped using them on game 20 years ago.

I have heard of folks using the 100 grain Barnes TSX on elk. After holding one of the shells in my hand I must say, if I was around 300 +or- 50 yards I think I would be pretty confident it would kill it.
Could some folks post some pictures they have from hunting or range time with the .257 weatherby?
Thanks,
Chris Kiefner

i shoot a 257 weath vangard moa. the only bullet it shoots good is the 110 accu. with  a nikon prostaff 4-12 i can get .36 with handloads.  my complaint is the weight and they don't make a vangard in left handed.
