10" TCA 22 barrel
« on: March 16, 2012, 02:41:11 PM »
I have the above octagon barrel that I want to mount a scope on. What scope mounts are available for the limited space I have to work with. The space of about 2 1/4 inches before the chamber meet the barrel?
Thanks

I don't have any TCA barrels but I like the TC duo-mount for all of my 10" octagon barrels.

A lot of folks don't like the lack of fore-aft room for adjustment, but it is the price you pay to stay within the available real estate on the octagon barrels.  I prefer the weaver 92a or Burris dual dovetail on my other barrels.

P.S.  Midway has them but they are pricey: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/436202/thompson-center-duo-ring-scope-base-with-1-rings-contender-g2-contender-gloss

P.S.S.  Oops, I see now that these have been discontinued.

I did not like the 92a on octagon barrels because it hangs out in the air over the octagon portion of the barrel.  I do use them on my other barrels though and like them just fine in those applications.

I agree with Curtis, the only place I like the duo-mount is on the octagon barrels.  If you can find one the older style duo's had the rings a little farther apart and a shorter base(looked sorta "Y" shaped from the side).  I really like them on the octagons.

Wow, looking around online I'm not finding any of the duo mounts anywhere (Numrich and other sources show either discontinued or sold out).  Your best bet might be at a gun show or try Ed's Contenders (GBO site sponsor).  Phone call is the best way to contact him, but be aware that he is a CPA and likely pretty busy during tax season.

Thanks for the information. The gun show yesterday produced nothing. Very little TC stuff period. Can I cut the weaver base to eliminate the overhang? I have a EGW base on now, but it also has overhang. I don't want to cut it, I can use it on a bull barrel. Didn't Thompson sell the one piece bases/ring setup?

why don't you put a "feeler" out on the Optics Classified here at GB and see if someone has one gathering dust somewhere.

Heh, if he doesn't, I will.  I didn't know they were discontinued until I started looking yesterday.  I thought I had an "extra" but all of mine are now mounted on barrels.  What if I buy another octagon barrel and want to scope it????  By the way, I love the octagon barrels in small bore calibers!!!

Reverse the Weaver base so it extends backwards, cut off this 'back' end so it lines up vertically flush with the rear of the receiver just forward of the hammer, (NOT the back end of the barrel) so it cantilevers over about 3/8"+ back of the breech end of the barrel.

File off part of the mount bottom so it will close and then cut another ring notch in the top of the back end of the mount, over where the frame and barrel breech meet.

A bit of effort but it worked really well on mine, and eliminated that ugly overhang in the front.

A GOOD little measuring square, a file and a hacksaw... and patience of course.

Used Millet extended rings to get more scope position adjustment length.

Pics maybe tonight when I get home.

Did you find it on line or locally?  Wonder if they have any more.

An ingenius solution, thanks for posting the pics.  I'm curious about your hammer.  It seems that the detents that keep the firing pin selector from turning are missing and some kind of pin has been substituted.  Am I correct?

Thanks,
Curtis

Correct.  Detents & spring were missing when I got it.  Brass pin because I use it only for 22LR.

Glad you scooped it up, XB.  I think that was a decent price considering they are discontinued.

Ah, a dedicated frame.  Nothing wrong with that.  I have a stainless frame that so far I have kept carbine only.  All my pistol barrels and frames are blued.
