fireforming brass

Any suggestions on fireforming to keep from splitting brass?

I have done cream of wheat method on 7-30 waters brass, but now i am fireforming 308x444 improved brass and keep splitting necks, i will try cream of wheat method on these to

Jason, I stand my cases in about 1 1/2 inches in a pan, then take my propane torch and heat the tops till there cherry red and then tip them over with the torch while there still red. I load 3 or 4 grs of bullseye in the case, a piece of kleenex to keep the powder in place, fill the rest of the case with cream o wheat, with a piece of kleenex on top. Try to keep your rifle pointed up at all times as every once in a while the wad of kleenex will fall out .

Nickle plated brass is not the thing to try, either. Some will fire form, but most will crack. I learned trying to f/f for my A.I.
New brass worked the best...

I agree anneal first.

I made a bunch of 256 Winchesters and later 7TCU cases and this was only way I made more than I split....

Only had to form 280AI cases so not an expert.  I used a shotgun powder and a tight wad of toilet paper in the neck.  It did not produce crisp shoulders but when later fired with a bullet the results were excellent.
I have a bunch of 7-30 cases I necked down from 30-30.  I guess the taper in the case wall will blow out a little when first fired.
I used to get split necks on 25-06 that I sized down from 30-06 military, but I never kept track with the times the cases were fired, they were loaded hot, and probably the case necks were too thick.  Blame that on youth.

Gun runner, do you have water in the pan to cool them is that why you tip them over after heating them?

Jason,
 You don't want to heat the entire case, you only need to soften the neck and shoulder area. The water keeps the heat off the base and allows for quick cooling when tipped over into the water.

At least deep enough so when tipped over the case is completely submerged.
