One piece at a time

Finally completed my 22 Hornet build from the receiver that was given to me.
All the other parts came from various GBO members. My thanks to them as I was able to obtain all the parts quickly.
Hoping for a range trip next week.
This is my second H&R, getting the bug I guess.

Congrats on the build, it looks really nice.

If it does flow back off the load or change to a less peaky powder. The velo will be a bit less but you kill with the placement, not with the last hundred fps.

Amen. My accuracy picked up substantially when I went to an SB1 frame that was originally a 410 shotgun, no "flow" problems whatsoever. If I needed more I would get a 222. I use 34 gr HP's and 11.0 gr 0f 4227, a moderate load.

  I tried 35 gr V-max over Lil' Gun, in various loadings...  The firing pin hole was larger than that on the SB2 however.  Thicker primers helped, but didn't cure though.

This frame has the small firing pin, looks about the same size as my contender.
Never had any problems with primer flow, even with max loads.

Hope this one doesn't give me any problems, will know this week sometime.

I hope its a shooter, my contender is very accurate, but was looking for something with a more steady platform for longer shots.
The farm where I deer hunt needs a good woodchuck house cleaning and a few yotes too.

Range trip yesterday, first and I guess foremost there are no primer problems. Max loads with CCI 400 and Rem 5 1/2 primers were normal.
This was primarily a function and sight in session. Even though the twist is the same as the contender, seems the H&R does not like my contender loads.
And so load development starts again. One load showed good accuracy at 50 YDS but opened up considerably at 100 YDS.
Back to the drawing board. I think with the right load the H&R will be a good shooter.

Dont give up, or start over too soon on loads! It is not unusual with these to have to get 50-100 rounds thru the barrel to season it in.

Per the FAQs the 22 hornet, new production since 1986, can have either 1:9 or 1:16 12 twist.  Also, i   bought 223 H&R barrel that had a 1:14 twist, the 22-250 twist. You might want to check your twist rate as it might be different than your contender or what you think it is.
 
NOTE:  I looked the twist rate up in the FAQs before I posted and still managed to screw it up. :-[

BB, this is the FAQs twist info for the 22 Hornet... .22 Hornet 1 n 12" (original H&R pre '87 1:16"?)(or 1:9" for late production) which means prior to '87 you might have a 1:16" barrel, those barrels will be the thin contour and likely have dovetailed rear sights, '87 until ~2007, you'll find 1:12" and later will be 1:9".  ;)

After double checking, the H&R and the Contender both have a 1-12 twist. My Contender wouldn't shoot anything over 40 Grs worth a hoot.
The 40 Gr V-Max and Nosler 40 Gr Spitzer were the best.The 35 Gr V-Max a very close second.

Maybe I am wrong in my thinking, but my guess is with the same twist the H&R is not going shoot anything above 40 Grs also.
Unlike the Contender it won't shoot worth a dang off the bipod either.
A new gun is always a challenge and finding what it likes is all part of the fun.

I had to do the temporary fix on the ejector to disable it, that baby shoots the cases about as far backwards as the bullets go forward.  ;D

Google up 'Greenhill Formula' for your twist rate to see what max. length projecile will stabilize. It sorta correlates to weight, but a long ojive bullet can mess you up.

Even better, use the stability calculator at the bottom of the JBM page, it's based on a modern formula, not the antiquated Greenhill formula.  ;)

The input criteria are simple, bullet diameter is .224", bullet weight in grains, bullet length as measured with the same caliper you use to measure COL, velocity and twist rate, use the default temp and barometric pressure unless you're shooting in extreme conditions like in the Himalayas!!  ;D

How's the stock?  I got a Handi-grip for one of mine.  The Handi-grip has alot more length between the pistol grip and the trigger.  Varmint stock and I guess Survivor stock have pistol grip closer to the trigger - better for smaller hands, but the Handi-grip is lighter - why I got it instead.

I like the Varmint stock but didn't have anything really suited to it.

Have read pressure point or bipod on forend 'might' be an accuracy issue but I never had that problem because I didn't bipod it - just put the sandbag under the barrel pivot point as usual with Handi rifles as recommended.

You'll get it right I'm sure.

Stock is great, but didn't take long to figure out the bipod was not going to work.
Once I put it on the bag, things started to shape up. Just a matter of sorting out what it likes.
